What do Alaska 3rd graders learn in ELA?

In 3rd grade, Alaska English language arts centers on main idea and details, vocabulary from context, and writing organized paragraphs. Students take the AK STAR grade 3 ELA test in the spring. Turn notes into a clear main-idea paragraph

A list of interesting details is not yet an explanation. For third-grade practice, collect details that belong together, state what they show, and organize a short paragraph. Students should be able to tell why a chosen detail supports the paragraph's focus before adding more sentences.

A worked Grade 3 reading and writing example

These original classroom examples model reasoning. They are fictional learning material, separate from official assessment questions.

These invented notes describe a class project: students labeled trays with each plant's name; a chart recorded which trays had been watered; pairs checked the chart before adding water; the labels used blue ink. The project took place in an imagined Alaska school garden.

Build the explanation

A useful focus is 'The class used records to organize plant care.' Names helped students identify trays, and the chart helped them coordinate watering. Blue ink is a true detail within the invented notes, but it does not explain how the system worked. Build the paragraph around the labels and chart, then finish by explaining how the records helped the class work together.

Diagnose the next learning need

If every note appears in the paragraph, ask the student to remove the detail least connected to the focus and explain the decision. If the main idea names only plants, ask what the notes say about the way students cared for them.
