Use meaningful word parts without treating them as a guessing shortcut

A familiar base word can help a reader understand a longer word, but the added part changes meaning. Begin with words whose parts are transparent. An adult models reading the complete word and checking it against the sentence.

Try the activity

Read replay and playful. Identify the base word shared by both words. Explain what re- contributes to replay and what -ful contributes to playful. Use the complete sentence to check your interpretations.

Follow the reasoning

Both words contain the base play. In replay, the prefix re- means again, so replay means play again. In playful, the suffix -ful helps form a describing word meaning inclined to play or full of playfulness. The class will play the song again for a puppy described as playful. The prefix is added before the base; the suffix is added after it. The meaning of the sentence supports both analyses. Saying that replay means a very playful puppy mixes up the two words and ignores what the class will do.

Notice what needs more practice

Meaningful parts support word analysis; they do not replace reading all the letters or checking context. Not every word beginning with the letters re has the prefix meaning again, and a word’s ending should not be split simply because it resembles a familiar suffix. Also notice the spelling: this suffix is written -ful with one l, although the separate word full has two. Playful is not two separate words in the sentence. These selected words introduce prefix and derivational-suffix meaning without claiming that every English word can be built by the same simple rule.

1. Read each complete word and identify its base.
2. Explain how the added prefix or suffix changes meaning.
3. Reread the sentence and check whether that meaning fits.

Compare replay with reread, using a sentence that makes the repeated action clear. Then compare playful with helpful in a sentence about a person who offers assistance. Ask the student to explain both the word part and the whole word, rather than recite again or full of without applying it. A teacher can choose a new word that preserves the student’s current decoding success, then introduce less transparent cases separately. Kansas Grade 3 word analysis also includes other suffixes, multisyllabic words, and irregular spellings; these two examples develop a small selected portion of that work.
