The club’s card-sorting procedure

This original classroom example is separate from official assessment questions.

The club makes a set of book cards. First, a member writes a title on each card. Next, the member places each card under the first letter of its title. Finally, another member checks the letters and moves any misplaced cards. The check happens after sorting so there is an arrangement to inspect.

Try the activity

Explain why the sorting step follows the title-writing step and why the check follows sorting. What would be missing if someone tried to check the arrangement before any cards were sorted?

Follow the reasoning

The title supplies the first letter used to decide where a card belongs, so the sorter needs that information before placing the card. The final checker compares the completed arrangement with the titles. Before sorting, there is no arrangement to inspect for misplaced cards. The text connects the steps through information each one supplies to the next, not just through “first,” “next,” and “finally.” An answer should explain those dependencies using the passage. The check might discover an error; the passage does not report actual cards or a result.

These are invented club directions, not a complete library cataloging method. Titles that begin with the same letter could need another sorting rule, but this short passage does not provide one. Identify that limit instead of silently adding a rule.
