ATI TEAS 7 Math Mistakes to Watch For

Line up decimal place values
When adding or subtracting decimals, align the decimal points. A zero can make the place values easier to see.

2.8 + 0.47 = 2.80 + 0.47 = 3.27. An estimate of a little more than 3 helps check the result.
Keep units through a conversion
Write the conversion factor so the original unit cancels. Check whether the new unit should make the number larger or smaller.

Using 1 liter = 1,000 milliliters, 0.75 L × 1,000 mL/L = 750 mL. The liters cancel.
Percent change uses the original amount
For a percent change, divide the difference by the starting value. The ending value is not the base.

A quantity rises from 40 to 50. The increase is 10, so the percent increase is 10/40 × 100% = 25%.
Keep an equation balanced
Apply each inverse operation to both sides. A substitution check catches a step that was applied to only one side.

For 4x + 7 = 31, subtract 7 to get 4x = 24, then divide by 4 to get x = 6. Check: 4 × 6 + 7 = 31.
Order data before finding a median
The middle value depends on the ordered list. With an even number of values, average the two middle values.

Order 9, 3, 7, and 5 as 3, 5, 7, 9. The median is (5 + 7)/2 = 6.
