How to use your book and practice tests

  1. Learn one focused topic. Read the lesson, redraw the important pathway or diagram, and explain it aloud in plain language.
  2. Complete the chapter practice before checking answers. Mark the question type that caused the miss: content, visual reading, calculation, or reasoning.
  3. Use the two print forms as timed checkpoints. Complete all 50 questions before opening the shared answer key and explanations.
  4. Use the online companion forms from your book. The access page and QR cards in the book open ten full-length private practice forms without placing their addresses on a public page.
  5. Review patterns, not just answers. Revisit the lesson behind each repeated error and retest yourself the next day.

Homeostasis

The body’s tendency to keep internal conditions, such as temperature or blood glucose, within a stable range.

Diffusion

The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.

Osmosis

The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane.

Artery

A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart; it does not always carry oxygen-rich blood.

Mitosis

Cell division that produces two genetically matching body cells for growth and repair.

Independent variable

The factor a researcher deliberately changes in an experiment.

Dependent variable

The measured result that may change in response to the independent variable.

Control group

A comparison group that does not receive the experimental change.

pH

A scale that describes how acidic or basic an aqueous solution is.

Accuracy

How close a measurement is to the accepted or true value.

Precision

How close repeated measurements are to one another.

Correlation

A relationship in which two variables change together; by itself, it does not prove cause and effect.

When a question feels difficult

Slow down and identify what the question is really asking. For a diagram, table, or graph, read its title, labels, legend, and units first. For a body-system question, trace the path or cause-and-effect chain. For an experiment, name what changed, what was measured, and what stayed controlled. These small routines turn unfamiliar questions into manageable evidence problems.
