HiSET Math Mistakes to Watch For

Use a missed or guessed question to choose your next review. Open a worked check, then follow the link to the matching topic. These examples explain the method and are not official test questions.

1

Order of operations

Work through parentheses and multiplication before addition. Keep one line of arithmetic per step so you can spot a skipped operation.

See a worked check

For 6 + 3(8 - 5), the parentheses give 3, multiplication gives 9, and the final value is 15.

Review the matching topic →

2

Dividing by a fraction

Use the reciprocal of the divisor, then simplify. Dividing by a positive fraction smaller than 1 makes the result larger.

See a worked check

3/4 ÷ 1/2 = 3/4 × 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2.

Review the matching topic →

3

Turning words into an equation

Name the unknown and keep the order of subtraction intact. Read the equation back as a sentence before solving it.

See a worked check

Seven less than twice a number translates to 2x - 7. If that equals 9, then 2x - 7 = 9 and x = 8.

Review the matching topic →

4

Converting area units

A conversion factor for length must be squared for area. Write the units into the calculation to keep the scale straight.

See a worked check

Since 1 ft = 12 in, 1 ft² = 12 × 12 = 144 in². An area of 2 ft² is 288 in².

Review the matching topic →

5

Mean and median

The mean uses every value, while the median is the middle of an ordered list. One large value can pull the mean away from the median.

See a worked check

For 2, 3, 3, 4, and 18, the median is 3. The mean is 30/5 = 6.
