What the ISEE measures

Reading

Students find details, identify ideas, make supported inferences, and understand words in context.

Mathematics

Every level has a math section. Lower through Upper also have quantitative reasoning, which emphasizes problem-solving.

Writing

Lower, Middle, and Upper students write one timed essay. Current Primary tests do not include writing.

Read a sample writing response

The Lower, Middle, and Upper essays are unscored, but schools can read them. These original models show how a student can answer a prompt with specific details in 30 minutes.

Primary 2, 3, and 4 do not have a writing sample on the current ISEE.

How to use this Online Center

  1. Pick the application grade. Open that level’s guide for exact sections and timing.
  2. Take an official sample. Use ERB’s free sample to get familiar with the real format.
  3. Study from the errors. Group misses by skill, then practice the two or three biggest gaps.
  4. Rehearse the pace. Try section-length practice and take the same breaks you will get on test day.

For Lower, Middle, and Upper math, our existing practice centers are linked from each level page. They are math resources, so pair them with reading, verbal, and essay work.
