The core ACT has 131 questions and 125 minutes of testing time: English has 50 questions in 35 minutes, Math has 45 questions in 50 minutes, and Reading has 36 questions in 40 minutes. Science adds 40 questions and 40 minutes. Writing adds one essay prompt and 40 minutes. These totals exclude breaks and check-in.

No. The current ACT Composite score uses English, Math, and Reading. Optional Science and Writing results are reported separately. Check your college or program’s requirements before deciding which sections to take.
