A route through an invented park

The route starts at the gate. Follow the path to the well. Turn left there and continue to the pond. The diagram belongs to this same invented route description.

Try the activity

Connect the path and turn in the illustration to the words. Explain how the diagram helps a reader understand where the turn happens. Does it tell the exact walking distance?

Follow the reasoning

The drawing places the gate, well, and pond on one connected path. Its bend at the well helps the reader picture the instruction “Turn left there.” Following the shown route from the gate, the reader reaches the well before turning toward the pond. The words give the sequence and action, while the illustration presents their spatial arrangement. The north arrow also orients the drawing, but the picture has no scale or measured distances. Its contribution is to make this route easier to picture, not to establish an exact distance or a real park’s layout.

Notice what needs more practice

The map is fictional and not drawn to scale. It supplies no real travel or outdoor safety directions. A left turn depends on the direction of travel; starting at the pond would change how to describe the turn. Match the stated starting point before interpreting the picture.
