Read a weather graph without claiming too much
A weather record becomes useful when students can show its pattern and explain the limits of what they observed. Alaska’s third-grade guide connects weather data with regional climates and hazard-reduction designs. Other strands explore motion, magnets, life cycles, traits, and how organisms survive in different environments.

What can one week of observations tell us?
Here is an invented five-day record for graph-reading practice: three days with precipitation and two days without precipitation. Make a bar graph with those two categories. Give the graph a title and label what was counted. These numbers describe a fictional observation week, not measured weather in Alaska.

Explain the result
The taller bar shows that precipitation was observed on more days in this example. It does not show how much rain or snow fell. It also does not establish the climate of the place. To describe a typical season, gather comparable records across that season; to compare climates, use reliable information covering longer periods and different regions.
What to check in a student’s explanation
If a student calls the graph a temperature graph, point to the category labels and ask what each bar counts. If the student says ‘this place is always rainy,’ ask which days the record actually covers. A sound answer keeps the conclusion within the evidence instead of treating a small sample as the whole climate.
Plan the next activity
- Choose one weather feature and record it consistently across an agreed observation period.
- Use a table, pictograph, or bar graph with clear categories and labels.
- Write one supported finding and one question that requires more information.
Alaska’s hazard examples include snow drifts and white-out conditions. Use teacher-selected information to identify a specific hazard, then compare two proposed ways to reduce its effects. Explain what evidence would be needed to judge the designs. A classroom model does not replace local safety guidance.
