Show continuity across generations without making one plant live forever

Build an original flowering-plant life-cycle model, distinguish an individual from the next generation, and read a selected Hawaiʻi Grade 3 NGSS reference.

The Hawaiʻi science standards directory identifies NGSS as the science standards and links the standards publisher. Use the Publisher NGSS document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

What should the arrow back to a seed mean?

A student makes four picture cards for a classroom bean-plant model: seed, seedling, mature flowering plant, and new seeds formed after reproduction. The student draws an arrow from the new seeds back to the first card and says, “The same plant starts its life again.” Revise the explanation so the model represents a new generation and includes the eventual death of an individual plant.

Explain the evidence or model

A seed can germinate and grow into a seedling, which develops into a mature plant. A flowering plant can reproduce and form seeds that may begin the next generation. The return arrow represents continuity between generations; it does not show an old plant becoming its own original seed. An individual plant eventually dies. A useful model can show that individual’s growth, reproduction, and death while a separate arrow connects its seeds with potential offspring.

Connections in the flowering-plant model
Model partMeaning
Seed to seedlingA possible beginning and growth of an individual
Mature plant to new seedsReproduction can produce the next generation
Individual plant eventually diesOne individual does not repeat its own life forever

What to check in the explanation

Not every seed in the drawing is guaranteed to germinate, and not every plant survives to reproduce. The cards simplify the process; they do not provide a schedule in days or show every reproductive step. Include those limits rather than treat the picture sequence as an observation of every plant. The selected elementary expectation limits plant-life-cycle assessment to flowering plants; it is not a checklist of all botanical life cycles.

Plan the next activity

  1. Label the stages and explain what each arrow connects.
  2. Distinguish the individual plant from possible offspring.
  3. Add death and identify what the simplified model leaves out.

Compare this flowering-plant model with a butterfly model using egg, larva, pupa, and adult cards. Find shared ideas of beginning life, growth, reproduction, and death while keeping the organisms’ different stages visible. Do not rename a seedling “larva” to make the diagrams look alike. Use classroom-approved observations or references to check the models and discuss how their different forms can still represent shared life-cycle ideas.

Hawaiʻi Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 connect to Hawaiʻi’s science assessment?

Grade 3 is outside the Grade 5 and Grade 8 science-assessment grades listed in the state overview. The state assessment overview lists science assessment in Grades 5 and 8 and the Biology 1 end-of-course assessment. Follow the school’s assigned assessment pathway and current guidance. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does a life-cycle arrow mean the same individual becomes young again?

No. The arrow to new seeds or offspring represents another generation. An individual grows and eventually dies; the model should distinguish it from its offspring.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Hawaiʻi science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 3 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
