Support a weather-hazard design claim with test evidence

Learn New Jersey Grade 3 science with a rain-shield design comparison, evidence limits, current 2026 standards, related lessons and quizzes.

The current 2026 New Jersey science standards were adopted June 3, 2026. The official adoption memo expects local curriculum revisions beginning in 2026–2027. Selected references here link to the official grade or band page. The complete current framework describes the science domains and climate-change and sustainability opportunities. Use the school’s curriculum and implementation guidance to select related investigations. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Support a weather-hazard design claim with test evidence

An imaginary outdoor reading table needs a shield that reduces rain reaching its paper cards. Design A has a flat roof; Design B has a sloped roof with an edge channel leading to a collection cup. An adult uses a small model and a gentle water pour. Three matched trials begin with ten dry cards each. Compare the invented record of cards remaining dry and explain what further checks a real design needs.

Explain the evidence or model

Design B leaves eight, nine, and eight cards dry; Design A leaves five, six, and five dry. B has the higher count in every paired trial, supporting a claim that it reduced water reaching the cards more effectively under these model conditions. Its channel directs some runoff toward a cup, which offers a possible explanation to check through observation. The evidence supports reducing an impact, not eliminating rain or every related hazard. Repeated trials reveal variation that a single successful demonstration would miss. Keep roof area, cards, pouring amount, and pouring position alike so the comparison addresses the designs rather than an easier test for one.

What to check in the explanation

The figures are invented and are not New Jersey rainfall measurements or an engineering certification. A small gentle pour does not represent wind-driven rain, overflowing gutters, structural loads, or flood safety. Do not test during a storm or climb to inspect a real roof. The 2026 Grade 3 expectation asks for a claim about a design’s merit in reducing a weather-related hazard; this paper-card model is one small practice example.

Plan the next activity

  1. Identify the impact to reduce and the measurement used.
  2. Compare all three trials and connect the claim to the actual counts.
  3. Name a new test needed before extending the claim beyond the model.

Compare a revised channel width while keeping the rest of Design B alike. Record both dry cards and whether the cup overflows. Explain why directing runoff away from one place can create a problem elsewhere if it is not managed.

New Jersey Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 connect to New Jersey’s science assessment?

Grade 3 is not a general science assessment grade listed in the official 2026–2027 schedule. The schedule lists science in Grades 5, 8, and 11. NJDOE identifies science as fixed-form while ELA and mathematics are adaptive. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway, current directions, and any alternate assessment requirements. Independent practice has its own timing and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Does a successful model mean the hazard has disappeared?

No. It provides evidence about reducing a particular impact under tested conditions. Real hazards and larger structures involve additional conditions and safety requirements.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read the current official 2026 New Jersey grade or band expectations and the framework’s implementation guidance. Read the Grade 3 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
