Identify an unknown material from more than one property

Study New Jersey Grade 5 science with a material-identification problem, property evidence, current 2026 standards, related lessons and quizzes.

The current 2026 New Jersey science standards were adopted June 3, 2026. The official adoption memo expects local curriculum revisions beginning in 2026–2027. Selected references here link to the official grade or band page. The complete current framework describes the science domains and climate-change and sustainability opportunities. Use the school’s curriculum and implementation guidance to select related investigations. This activity selects a Grade 5 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Identify an unknown material from more than one property

A teacher provides an invented reference record for three known materials and one unknown sample. Compare magnet attraction and whether the sample bends under the same safe test. The unknown is attracted to the magnet and does not bend in the stated test. Which reference sample matches both observations? Explain why the match remains a tentative identification.

Explain the evidence or model

Known sample B matches both observations. Sample A shares magnet attraction but bends, and sample C does not bend but is not attracted. Comparing two properties narrows the candidates more than either property alone. It supports identifying B as the matching sample within this small reference set, not proving the unknown’s exact composition. Record the sample labels, size, shape, and test method so observations can be repeated. The bending result depends on how the test is performed and the sample’s dimensions, so treat it as an observation of this specimen under specified conditions. The selected expectation concerns using observations and measurements of properties to identify materials; this limited qualitative record needs further measurements for a fuller investigation.

What to check in the explanation

“Not attracted” does not mean “not a metal”: many metals do not show strong attraction to a classroom magnet. Color alone can be misleading, and a coating can change surface appearance. Do not taste an unknown substance or force a sample to break. Use teacher-approved objects with smooth edges. These invented labels are not chemical names, and the activity does not provide evidence about electrical safety or food suitability.

Plan the next activity

  1. Compare every recorded property instead of stopping at the first match.
  2. State which candidate fits and which competing candidates the observations exclude.
  3. Choose an additional teacher-approved property measurement that could test the tentative identification.

Extend the record with measurements such as mass and dimensions for comparable samples. Describe how size differences affect the comparison and what new evidence would distinguish two samples sharing the original properties. Retain a label for unresolved cases rather than inventing certainty.

New Jersey Grade 5 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 5 connect to New Jersey’s science assessment?

Grade 5 is a science assessment grade in the official 2026–2027 statewide schedule. The schedule lists science in Grades 5, 8, and 11. NJDOE identifies science as fixed-form while ELA and mathematics are adaptive. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway, current directions, and any alternate assessment requirements. Independent practice has its own timing and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Does a magnetic match prove the exact material?

No. Several materials can share an observed property. Use a combination of reliable observations and measurements and state the limits of the reference set.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read the current official 2026 New Jersey grade or band expectations and the framework’s implementation guidance. Read the Grade 5 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
