Borrow a protective structure from a living thing
Explore New Jersey Grade 1 science with a protective-cover design, structure-and-function reasoning, current 2026 standards, related lessons and quizzes.
The current 2026 New Jersey science standards were adopted June 3, 2026. The official adoption memo expects local curriculum revisions beginning in 2026–2027. Selected references here link to the official grade or band page. The complete current framework describes the science domains and climate-change and sustainability opportunities. Use the school’s curriculum and implementation guidance to select related investigations. This activity selects a Grade 1 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.
Borrow a protective structure from a living thing
A class wants a cover that protects a paper figure when a soft paper ball gently bumps it. An adult provides a picture or model of a turtle, plain paper, folded paper, and tape. Notice the turtle’s external shell and sketch a cover inspired by its protective shape. Build two small covers and compare them using the same figure and a gentle, teacher-controlled bump. This is a classroom design problem, not a test on a living animal.
Explain the evidence or model
The borrowed idea is an external structure that provides protection. A curved or folded paper cover can make a barrier around the figure; its shape may help it resist a gentle bump better than a flat sheet. That is a prediction to test, not a result already observed. Record whether each cover stays in place, keeps the ball from touching the figure, and can be lifted without tearing it. Use the same ball, starting position, and figure for both covers. A supported explanation links an observed design feature to a protective function: for example, a raised cover kept the ball away in the recorded trial. The model copies a useful relationship between structure and function, not every property of a shell.
What to check in the explanation
Do not attach anything to a turtle or disturb an animal to test the idea. Paper is not the same material as a shell, and a toy cover does not grow or repair itself. A successful gentle trial does not establish protection against every impact. Young learners can draw observations and dictate an explanation; elaborate terminology is less useful than pointing to the part and explaining its job.
Plan the next activity
- Observe the external part in the supplied picture and name its protective job.
- Sketch, build, and compare two safe covers under matching conditions.
- Use an actual observation to explain which feature to keep or improve.
Try a different fold while keeping the amount of paper alike. Draw the first and revised covers and explain what changed. Then discuss another external part, such as a plant stem that supports leaves, and identify a different human problem it might inspire.

How does Grade 1 connect to New Jersey’s science assessment?
Grade 1 is not a general science assessment grade listed in the official 2026–2027 schedule. The schedule lists science in Grades 5, 8, and 11. NJDOE identifies science as fixed-form while ELA and mathematics are adaptive. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway, current directions, and any alternate assessment requirements. Independent practice has its own timing and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.
Must a nature-inspired design look exactly like the animal?
No. Identify the useful function and adapt a feature to the human problem. Explain which feature was borrowed and which parts of the living organism the model does not represent.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
Read the current official 2026 New Jersey grade or band expectations and the framework’s implementation guidance. Read the Grade 1 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
