All Minnesota Grade 1 Science Standards

  • 1L.1.1.1.1Doing ScienceAsk questions based on observations about the similarities and differences between young plants and animals and their parents.
  • 1P.1.2.1.1Sound and VibrationsPlan and conduct investigations to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.
  • 1P.2.1.1.1Choosing the Right MaterialIdentify and describe patterns obtained from testing different materials and determine which materials have properties best suited for producing and/or transmitting sound.
  • 1E.2.2.1.1Fast and Slow Earth ChangesUse quantitative data to describe patterns in how long Earth processes take and determine whether they occur quickly or slowly.
  • 1L.3.1.1.1Plant and Animal PartsDevelop a simple model based on evidence to represent how plants or animals use external parts to survive, grow, and meet their needs.
  • 1P.3.2.2.1Communicating Over a DistanceDesign and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance.
  • 1L.3.2.2.2Plant and Animal PartsPlan and design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants or animals use external parts to survive, grow, and meet needs.
  • 1E.4.1.1.1Doing ScienceConstruct an argument from observational evidence for how plants and animals, including humans, change non-living aspects of the environment to meet their needs.
  • 1E.4.1.2.1Wind and Water Shape the LandConstruct an argument with evidence to evaluate multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land.
  • 1E.4.2.1.1Communicate solutions that will reduce the impactCommunicate solutions that will reduce the impact of humans on the land, water, air, and/or other living things in the local environment.
  • 1L.4.2.1.2Parents and OffspringObtain information using various features of texts and other media to determine patterns in the behavior of parents and offspring that help offspring survive.
  • 1P.4.2.2.1Communicate solutions that use materials to provideCommunicate solutions that use materials to provide shelter, food, or warmth needs for communities including Minnesota American Indian Tribes and communities.

Minnesota Grade 1 Science FAQ

Does Minnesota test science in grade 1?

There is no state science test in grades 1 and 2; Minnesota assesses science in grade 5, grade 8, and once in high school. The standards on this page are still what grade 1 teachers in Minnesota teach, and they are what later science testing is built on.

Which standards does grade 1 science in Minnesota follow?

Minnesota follows the Minnesota Academic Standards in Science (2019 Version). All 12 of this grade’s standards are listed further down this page with their official codes.

How long are the practice tests?

Each of the six practice tests has 14 questions and no timer. A first grader can work through one in about ten to fifteen minutes, and there is no clock counting down while they think.

My child cannot read the questions yet. Can we still use this?

Yes, and that is how most families use it. The questions are written short and plain so you can read them aloud, and the explanation after each answer is written for you, not for the child. It says why the right answer is right and suggests something you can try together.

Is any of this free?

Yes. Every practice test and quiz on this page is free and needs no login. Progress is saved in your own browser and nowhere else.

What is the fastest way to use this page?

Do practice test 1 together, without helping. Look at the breakdown by science area, pick the weakest one, and do that skill quiz. There are 7 quizzes, one per idea, so you can work on the shaky part instead of everything at once.
