1 Exploring phenomena or engineering problems
- 4P.1.1.1.1Forces, Motion, and InteractionsAsk questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric and magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other
- 4E.1.1.1.2Questions About Water Moves Through Earth System TypeAsk questions about how water moves through the Earth system and identify the type of question
- 4P.1.1.2.1Simple Problem Solved Applying Scientific Ideas About MagnetsDefine a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets
- 4E.1.2.1.1Earth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsMake observations and measurements to provide evidence of the effects of weathering or the rate of erosion by the forces of water, ice, wind, or vegetation
- 4E.1.2.1.2Carry Out Fair Tests Which Variables Controlled FailurePlan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to improve a model or prototype to prevent erosion
2 Looking at data and empirical evidence to understand phenomena or solve problems
- 4E.2.2.1.1Earth's Water, Freshwater, and Saltwater ResourcesInterpret charts, maps and/or graphs of the amounts of salt water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth
3 Developing possible explanations of phenomena or designing solutions to engineering problems
- 4E.3.1.1.1Based Part Observations Data Ways Geosphere Biosphere HydrosphereDevelop a model based in part on student observations or data to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere interact
- 4E.3.2.1.1Earth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsIdentify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock layers to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time
- 4E.3.2.2.1Engineering Design and Solution EvaluationGenerate and compare multiple solutions to reduce the impacts of natural Earth processes on humans
4 Communicating reasons, arguments and ideas to others
- 4L.4.1.1.1Cells, Body Systems, and GeneticsConstruct or support an argument that traits can be influenced by different environments
- 4E.4.2.1.1Natural Resources and Human ImpactsRead and comprehend grade appropriate complex texts and/or other reliable media to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and their uses affect the environment
- 4E.4.2.1.2Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesObtain information from various media sources to determine that plants and animals have traits inherited from parents and that variation of these traits exists in a group of similar organisms
- 4E.4.2.2.1Natural Resources and Human ImpactsObtain and combine multiple sources of information about ways individual communities, including Minnesota American Indian Tribes and communities and other cultures use evidence and scientific principles to make decisions about the uses of Earth's resources

Minnesota Grade 4 Science FAQ
Does Minnesota test science in grade 4?
No. Minnesota gives the MCA-Science in grades 5 and 8, so grade 4 students do not sit a state science test this year. Minnesota also gives once in high school. The standards on this page are still the ones grade 4 teachers teach, and they are what the next science test builds on.
Which standards does grade 4 science in Minnesota follow?
Minnesota follows the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards in Science, published by the Minnesota Department of Education. All 13 of this grade's standards are listed further down the page with their official codes.
How long are the practice tests?
Each of the six practice tests has 30 questions and a 55-minute timer. The timer auto-submits at zero and you get your score, a breakdown by science area, and a written explanation for every question.
Is any of this free?
Yes, every practice test, quiz, and flashcard set on this page is free and needs no login. Your progress is saved in your own browser and nowhere else.
What is the fastest way to use this page?
Take practice test 1 cold. Look at the topic breakdown, pick the weakest science area, and do that skill quiz. Then read the quick review for that area and come back for practice test 2.
