Compare designs against a purpose and a limit

Explore Nevada Grade 4 science with a flood-model design comparison, worked reasoning, selected state references and related lessons and quizzes.

The Nevada academic standards directory links the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Science, February 2014 DCI arrangements. This document identifies grade-level performance expectations and a Grades 6–8 middle-school band, including clarification statements, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete document with the school’s curriculum plan; these selected references do not cover the entire course. This activity selects a Grade 4 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Protect a model building while keeping access open

A classroom flood model uses a toy building and a marked access path. Propose more than one design that aims to keep the building dry and the path open. The material budget is ten tokens. Then compare the three invented trial records below. Which design meets all the stated criteria and the budget? Explain why the choice is limited to this model.

Explain the evidence or model

Design B meets the three stated conditions: the building stays dry in the trial, the access path remains open, and its eight-token cost is within ten. Design A costs less but blocks the required path. Design C keeps the building dry and the path open, but its twelve-token cost exceeds the budget. Choosing B therefore follows the criteria and constraint rather than treating the cheapest or most expensive design as automatically best. Generate sketches before using the supplied comparison so the activity includes proposing as well as evaluating solutions. Explain how each design changes the water’s route around the model building.

What to check in the explanation

One invented trial does not establish reliable flood protection for an actual building. Water can find new paths or exceed a barrier, and a solution that redirects it could create another problem. A classroom model does not eliminate the natural process; it investigates reducing an impact under selected conditions. Real flood design and emergency decisions require qualified local guidance. The full Grade 4 reference covers specified natural processes; this activity selects floods and a limited design comparison.

Plan the next activity

  1. Sketch at least two ways to protect the model without closing the path.
  2. Name what must stay the same when comparing trial conditions.
  3. Check each recorded result against every criterion and the budget; suggest another trial.

Retest classroom designs with a different teacher-selected model water condition. Record whether the earlier choice still meets the criteria and how its limitations change. Keep all work within the supervised tabletop model.

Nevada Grade 4 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 4 connect to Nevada’s science assessment?

Grade 4 is not listed as a science accountability assessment grade in the current state overview. The Nevada Department of Education identifies science accountability assessment once in Grade 5, once in Grade 8, and once in high school. Its overview describes computer-based school administration in the spring. Science instruction continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s current directions and assigned pathway, including any alternate assessment requirements. Independently published practice uses its own question counts, timers, topics, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment or a prediction of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Why is Design C not the best choice under these rules?

Its twelve-token material cost exceeds the ten-token budget, even though the invented trial meets both performance criteria. Design B meets the criteria and stays within budget.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Nevada academic standards directory and its linked K–12 science document. Read the Grade 4 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
