Ohio tests science in grades 5 and 8, not in grade 4, so fourth grade is the year to build the ideas the Ohio State Test (OST) Science will ask about later. Practice tests, skill quizzes, flashcards, and every Ohio science standard for this grade, free.

ESS Earth and Space Science

  • 4.ESS.1.aWater Cycle, Weather, Climate, and AtmosphereAbout 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered with water and most of that is the ocean. Only a small portion of the Earth's water is freshwater, which is found in rivers, lakes, groundwater and glaciers
  • 4.ESS.1.bEarth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsEarth's surface can change due to erosion and deposition of soil, rock or sediment
  • 4.ESS.1.cCatastrophic Events Flooding Volcanoes Earthquakes Landforms Changes Earth'SCatastrophic events such as flooding, volcanoes and earthquakes can create landforms
  • 4.ESS.2.aEarth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsRocks change shape, size and/or form due to water or glacial movement, freeze and thaw, wind, plant growth, acid rain, pollution and catastrophic events such as earthquakes, flooding, and volcanic activity
  • 4.ESS.3.aEarth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsLiquid water, wind and ice physically remove and carry rock, soil and sediment (erosion) and deposit the material in a new location (deposition)
  • 4.ESS.3.bEarth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsGravitational force affects movements of water, rock and soil

PS Physical Science

  • 4.PS.1.aMatter Properties, States, and ClassificationWhen an object is broken into smaller pieces, when a solid is dissolved in a liquid or when matter changes state (solid, liquid, gas), the total amount of matter remains constant
  • 4.PS.2.aEnergy Forms, Transfer, and TransformationEnergy transfers from hot objects to cold objects as heat, resulting in a temperature change
  • 4.PS.2.bMaterial Properties and UsesElectric circuits require a complete loop of conducting materials through which electrical energy can be transferred
  • 4.PS.2.cMagnets, Electricity, and CircuitsElectrical energy in circuits can be transformed to other forms of energy, including light, heat, sound and motion. Electricity and magnetism are closely related

LS Life Science

  • 4.LS.1.aOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesEcosystems can change gradually or dramatically. When the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce and others die or move to new locations
  • 4.LS.1.bOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesEcosystems are based on interrelationships among and between biotic and abiotic factors. These include the diversity of other organisms present, the availability of food and other resources, and the physical attributes of the environment
  • 4.LS.2.aOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesThe concept of biodiversity is expanded to include different classification schemes based upon shared internal and external characteristics of organisms
  • 4.LS.2.bMost Species Lived Earth ExtinctMost species that have lived on Earth are extinct
  • 4.LS.2.cOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesFossils provide a point of comparison between the types of organisms that lived long ago and those existing today

Ohio Grade 4 Science FAQ

Does Ohio test science in grade 4?

No. Ohio gives the Ohio State Test (OST) Science in grades 5 and 8, so grade 4 students do not sit a state science test this year. Ohio also gives a high school biology test. The standards on this page are still the ones grade 4 teachers teach, and they are what the next science test builds on.

Which standards does grade 4 science in Ohio follow?

Ohio follows the Ohio's Learning Standards and Model Curriculum for Science, published by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. All 15 of this grade's standards are listed further down the page with their official codes.

How long are the practice tests?

Each of the six practice tests has 30 questions and a 55-minute timer. The timer auto-submits at zero and you get your score, a breakdown by science area, and a written explanation for every question.

Is any of this free?

Yes, every practice test, quiz, and flashcard set on this page is free and needs no login. Your progress is saved in your own browser and nowhere else.

What is the fastest way to use this page?

Take practice test 1 cold. Look at the topic breakdown, pick the weakest science area, and do that skill quiz. Then read the quick review for that area and come back for practice test 2.
