Ohio Grade 3 Science Topics

These are the 16 science standards Ohio sets for grade 3, from the Ohio's Learning Standards and Model Curriculum for Science, grouped and ordered exactly the way the state's own standards document groups them. Each one is tagged with its official code so you can trace it straight back to the state document.

ESS Earth and Space Science

  • 3.ESS.1.aEarth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsSoil is composed of pieces of rock, organic material, water and air and has characteristics that can be measured and observed. Use the term "soil", not "dirt". Dirt and soil are not synonymous
  • 3.ESS.1.bEarth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsRocks have specific characteristics that allow them to be sorted and compared. Rocks form in different ways. Air and water are also nonliving resources
  • 3.ESS.2.aWater Cycle, Weather, Climate, and AtmosphereRenewable energy resources, such as wind, water or solar energy, can be replenished within a short amount of time by natural processes
  • 3.ESS.2.bNatural Resources and Human ImpactsNonrenewable energy is a finite resource, such as natural gas, coal or oil, which cannot be replenished in a short amount of time
  • 3.ESS.3.aNatural Resources and Human ImpactsSome of Earth's resources become limited due to overuse and/or contamination. Reducing resource use, decreasing waste and/or pollution, recycling and reusing can help conserve these resources

PS Physical Science

  • 3.PS.1.aMatter Properties, States, and ClassificationMatter takes up space and has mass
  • 3.PS.1.bDifferentiating Between Mass Weight Not Necessary Grade LevelDifferentiating between mass and weight is not necessary at this grade level
  • 3.PS.2.aMatter Properties, States, and ClassificationThe most recognizable states of matter are solids, liquids and gases
  • 3.PS.2.bMatter Properties, States, and ClassificationShape and compressibility are properties that can distinguish between the states of matter
  • 3.PS.2.cMatter Properties, States, and ClassificationOne way to change matter from one state to another is by heating or cooling
  • 3.PS.3.aForces, Motion, and InteractionsThere are many different forms of energy. Energy is the ability to cause motion or create change. The different forms of energy that are outlined at this grade level should be limited to familiar forms that a student is able to observe

LS Life Science

  • 3.LS.1.aOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesIndividual organisms inherit many traits from their parents indicating a reliable way to transfer information from one generation to the next
  • 3.LS.1.bCells, Body Systems, and GeneticsSome behavioral traits are learned through interactions with the environment and are not inherited
  • 3.LS.2.aOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesPlants and animals have physical features that are associated with the environments where they live
  • 3.LS.2.bOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesPlants and animals have certain physical or behavioral characteristics that influence their chances of surviving in particular environments
  • 3.LS.3.aOrganism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesWorldwide, organisms are growing, reproducing, dying and decaying. The details of the life cycle are different for different organisms, which affects their ability to survive and reproduce in their natural environments

Ohio Grade 3 Science FAQ

Does Ohio test science in grade 3?

No. Ohio gives the Ohio State Test (OST) Science in grades 5 and 8, so grade 3 students do not sit a state science test this year. Ohio also gives a high school biology test. The standards on this page are still the ones grade 3 teachers teach, and they are what the next science test builds on.

Which standards does grade 3 science in Ohio follow?

Ohio follows the Ohio's Learning Standards and Model Curriculum for Science, published by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. All 16 of this grade's standards are listed further down the page with their official codes.

How long are the practice tests?

Each of the six practice tests has 25 questions and a 45-minute timer. The timer auto-submits at zero and you get your score, a breakdown by science area, and a written explanation for every question.

Is any of this free?

Yes, every practice test, quiz, and flashcard set on this page is free and needs no login. Your progress is saved in your own browser and nowhere else.

What is the fastest way to use this page?

Take practice test 1 cold. Look at the topic breakdown, pick the weakest science area, and do that skill quiz. Then read the quick review for that area and come back for practice test 2.
