Ask a question about magnets before changing the setup
Use an original magnet-distance record to ask a testable question, distinguish distance from orientation, and study an Illinois Grade 3 force expectation.
The Illinois science standards directory identifies NGSS as the science standards and links the standards publisher. Use the Illinois Learning Standards for Science document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.
What should stay the same when the gap changes?
A teacher places a small classroom bar magnet on a smooth track and holds another bar magnet with unlike poles facing it. The magnets do not touch at the starting positions. In an invented observation record, the movable magnet starts sliding at a small gap but remains still at a larger gap. Students ask how changing the starting distance affects the interaction while keeping pole orientation and the rest of the setup the same.
Explain the evidence or model
A useful question is, “With unlike poles still facing each other, does the movable magnet start sliding when the starting gap changes?” It names the changed condition and an observable result. The small-gap movement provides evidence of an interaction without initial contact. Remaining still at the larger gap does not establish that the magnetic force is exactly zero: the force may be insufficient to overcome friction and produce visible movement. The record therefore supports a difference in observed motion under these conditions, rather than a measured formula for magnetic force.
| Starting gap | Pole arrangement | Observed result |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Unlike poles facing | Movable magnet begins sliding |
| Larger | Unlike poles facing | No visible sliding |
What to check in the explanation
Turning one magnet around while also moving it farther away changes two conditions. Students could no longer attribute a changed result to distance alone. Likewise, a rougher track or a different movable magnet could change whether motion is visible. Keep classroom magnets away from mouths and use only teacher-selected materials; do not substitute small powerful magnets. The selected expectation also includes static-electric interactions, but this magnetic investigation does not cover those interactions.
Plan the next activity
- State a question about the starting gap and visible movement.
- Keep the same magnet, track, starting orientation, and release method.
- Record what happens in repeated trials without calling no motion no force.
Test several clearly marked gaps and record each trial separately. Do not invent a numerical force value from whether the magnet slides. In a second investigation, keep one gap fixed and compare unlike poles facing with like poles facing. Ask which direction the movable magnet initially travels. Label this as an orientation investigation so its result is not mixed with the distance comparison. The two questions examine different cause-and-effect relationships. Use the teacher’s complete course plan for the other Grade 3 force and engineering expectations.

How does Grade 3 connect to Illinois’s science assessment?
Grade 3 is outside the Grade 5 and Grade 8 science-assessment grades listed in the state overview. The Illinois Science Assessment overview identifies Grades 5 and 8. Students eligible for DLM use the assigned alternative pathway. Follow the school’s assigned assessment pathway and current guidance. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.
Does a magnet staying still prove there is no magnetic force?
No. Friction or other conditions may prevent visible motion. The observation establishes no sliding in that setup, not a measurement of zero magnetic force.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
Start with the Illinois science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 3 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
