Model a life cycle without making every stage look alike

Model and compare life cycles in New Mexico Grade 3 science, explain growth and new generations, and find selected references, lessons, quizzes, and state guidance.

New Mexico’s science rule, NMAC 6.29.10, incorporates NGSS with additional state expectations, effective July 1, 2018. The selected NGSS references here were checked in the original publisher’s Next Generation Science Standards, September 2017 DCI arrangements. That document’s publication date identifies the reference copy; the state rule establishes New Mexico’s requirements. Read complete performance expectations, clarifications, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts alongside the school’s course plan. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Also read the six additional New Mexico expectations and their framework. The state additions complement NGSS; this selected activity does not cover all of them.

Model a life cycle without making every stage look alike

Use teacher-selected photographs or illustrations to model a sunflower’s life cycle and a butterfly’s life cycle. Show an established plant growing, flowering, producing seeds, and eventually dying; show new plants developing from seeds. For the butterfly, show eggs, a growing caterpillar, a pupa, and an adult that can reproduce before it eventually dies. Draw arrows and explain what they represent.

Explain the evidence or model

The models have different visible stages. A sunflower does not have a caterpillar or pupa stage, and a butterfly does not make seeds. Both models can represent a new organism beginning life, growing, producing a next generation, and eventually dying. Arrows between stages describe changes within an organism’s life; an arrow from an adult to eggs or seeds represents reproduction leading to a new generation. Label that distinction so the model does not suggest that the same individual becomes its own offspring. The purpose is to compare a shared pattern with different life histories, not to give every stage an identical duration. Use the supplied media to revise any stage placement that does not match the organism.

What to check in the explanation

Not every individual survives to adulthood or reproduces. A cycle describes a pattern across generations, not a guarantee that each organism completes every stage. A seed is not an adult butterfly egg, even though both models show how a new generation begins. This task uses a flowering plant and avoids details of human reproduction. It is a conceptual model, not a record of a complete life cycle observed by the class.

Plan the next activity

  1. Arrange the images into an organism-specific sequence.
  2. Label arrows for growth and for a new generation.
  3. Compare shared processes while retaining different stages.

Compare another teacher-selected flowering plant with the sunflower. Explain which stage details differ and which broader pattern remains. Add a branch showing that an individual may die before reproducing, and discuss why that does not mean a new generation is always absent from the population.

New Mexico Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 connect to New Mexico’s science assessment?

Grade 3 is outside the general ASR science assessment grades listed in the current state fact sheet. The 2026–2027 ASR fact sheet identifies Grades 5, 8, and 11. It describes a computer-based, fixed-form assessment with three untimed sessions. Confirm the learner’s assigned pathway and current school directions, including any alternate assessment requirements. Science learning continues in other grades. Results are one measure and should be considered alongside classroom work. Independent practice has its own timing, coverage, and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Does a cycle mean the same individual starts over?

No. Growth changes an individual; reproduction can begin a new generation. Label the arrows so these relationships stay distinct.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read New Mexico’s science rule, NMAC 6.29.10, the complete NGSS expectations, and the six additional New Mexico expectations. Read all Grade 3 expectations and supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected activity is not a complete alignment map. Read the official guidance.
