Separate a fossil observation from a past-environment explanation

Interpret an original two-layer fossil scenario, explain what it supports and what remains unknown, and follow Delaware Grade 3 science references.

The Delaware science standards directory identifies NGSS adoption in 2013 and links a state topical arrangement beginning with Grade 3. Use the Delaware topical arrangement for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

What might fossils tell us about a changed landscape?

An imaginary, undisturbed stack of rock layers has a lower layer containing marine-shell fossils and an upper layer containing land-plant fossils. Assume the fossil identifications and layer observations are reliable for this teaching scenario. The place now has dry ground. No exact ages, species names, or real Delaware fossil-site data are supplied.

Explain the evidence or model

The shell fossils support the presence of marine organisms when the lower layer formed. The plant fossils provide evidence of plants associated with a land environment in the later upper layer. In this undisturbed scenario, the lower layer formed before the upper one. Together, these observations support an explanation that the environment changed over time. Today’s dry ground does not rule out an earlier marine environment. Write the observed fossils and the proposed explanation separately so a reader can see which evidence supports which claim.

Two fossil-bearing layers in relative orderAn upper layer has land-plant fossils and a lower layer has marine-shell fossils. Under the stated undisturbed-sequence assumption, lower is earlier and upper is later. No numerical ages are supplied.Teaching scenario: undisturbed layersUpper layer: land-plant fossilsLater in this sequenceLower layer: marine-shell fossilsEarlier in this sequence
Fossil groups are observations in an invented scenario. The environmental explanation depends on the stated assumptions.

What to check in the explanation

Do not give an exact year from layer position alone or claim that every fossil came from an organism living at the precise place where it was found. Fossils and sediments can be moved; more evidence would be needed to evaluate that possibility at a real site. The scenario deliberately supplies an undisturbed sequence, so its relative-order explanation depends on that assumption. A single shell also does not establish every detail of a past ocean, such as water depth or temperature.

Plan the next activity

  1. Draw two labeled layers and list the fossil observations without adding an age or species name.
  2. Connect each fossil group to a supported environmental idea. Use phrases such as supports the explanation to keep inference distinct from direct observation.
  3. Name one additional observation that would help at a real site, such as the surrounding rock features or whether the layers have been disturbed.

Ask how the explanation would change if the layers were folded or the shells had been carried into a later deposit. The aim is to reason from evidence and assumptions, not memorize a precise date. Use the existing fossils lesson and related quiz for further study, keeping this invented example separate from actual state geological records.

Delaware Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 connect to Delaware’s science assessment?

Grade 3 is outside Delaware’s NGSS summative assessment grades. The state lists science assessments in Grades 5, 8, and high-school biology. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Do marine fossils on dry land prove that today’s landscape is unchanged?

No. They can support an explanation of an earlier marine environment. Layer evidence and other observations help evaluate how the environment changed; fossils alone do not supply an exact date or every past condition.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Delaware science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 3 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
