Build a model of a seed hitching a ride

Design an original hook-and-loop seed model, explain how it represents animal dispersal, and use Delaware Grade 2 science references.

The Delaware science standards directory identifies NGSS adoption in 2013 and links a state topical arrangement beginning with Grade 3. Use the Publisher NGSS document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 2 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

How can a seed move without walking?

An imaginary design task represents a seed with a small paper piece carrying a hook-and-loop patch. A strip of fuzzy cloth represents part of an animal’s coat. The task is to model attachment, movement, and later release to a new place. The paper and cloth are model materials, not a living plant or animal, and no trial counts are provided.

Explain the evidence or model

When the patch attaches to the fuzzy cloth, moving the cloth carries the paper piece with it. Detaching it at another marked place models a seed being transported away from its parent plant. The paper does not move itself; the cloth supplies the movement. This represents one kind of external animal-assisted dispersal. It does not model every seed, a seed passing through an animal, or a plant being pollinated. Label the model seed, coat, starting location, and release location so its intended function is clear.

What the seed-carrying model represents
Model part or actionRepresented function
Paper with a patchA seed able to attach externally
Fuzzy clothPart of an animal’s coat
Moving the clothTransport to another place
Detaching the paperRelease after transport

What to check in the explanation

A model that attaches securely but never releases does not represent the whole dispersal sequence. A model that falls off immediately may fail to represent transport. Compare the functions rather than demanding that the paper look exactly like a real seed. Also distinguish dispersal from germination: arrival at a new location does not prove a seed will grow there. The new location must still supply conditions the plant needs.

Plan the next activity

  1. Mark a starting place and a release place. Try to carry the model seed with the cloth, then detach it at the release mark.
  2. Compare a paper seed without a patch under the same movement. Record whether each stays attached during transport; do not invent success counts.
  3. Revise one design feature and explain how it changes attachment, carrying, or release. Name what the model leaves out.

Ask the student to describe the animal’s role in a complete sentence and match each model part to its function. Use the existing seeds-and-animal-helpers lesson and related quiz to compare this external-carrying model with other plant relationships. Keep the claim specific to one represented function rather than all seed dispersal.

Delaware Grade 2 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 2 connect to Delaware’s science assessment?

Grade 2 is outside Delaware’s NGSS summative assessment grades. The state lists science assessments in Grades 5, 8, and high-school biology. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does moving a model seed show that a new plant will grow?

No. It models transport and release. A real seed also needs suitable conditions to germinate and grow, which this carrying model does not test.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Delaware science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 2 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
