Compare kinds of living things rather than just count individuals
Use original habitat observation notes to distinguish variety from abundance, question a limited sample, and plan a Grade 2 comparison of living things.
The Iowa science standards directory links the science standards adopted May 8, 2025. Use the 2025 Iowa Academic Standards: Science for the selected performance expectation and its complete supporting information. This activity selects a Grade 2 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.
Do more observed insects mean more kinds of living things?
A teacher presents invented observation notes from a garden edge and a grassy area. The first record names four broad kinds noticed: flowering plants, grasses, ants, and beetles. The second names grasses and ants, with many individual ants visible. Students compare the kinds recorded rather than assume the place with more individual ants has greater observed variety. These are original teaching records, not a survey of an actual Iowa location.
Explain the evidence or model
The garden-edge record includes four broad kinds, while the grassy-area record includes two. That supports saying more kinds were recorded at the garden edge in this comparison. Many ants increase the number of individuals without adding another recorded kind. The comparison does not establish the total diversity of either habitat, because the record covers only what was noticed during the sample. Broad labels such as flowering plants can also include several different kinds that the notes do not distinguish. Explain the level of detail being counted before using the numbers as evidence.
| Record | Broad kinds listed | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Garden edge | Flowering plants, grasses, ants, beetles | Four broad labels, not a complete species inventory |
| Grassy area | Grasses, ants | Many ants do not add another listed kind |
What to check in the explanation
Not noticing a living thing does not prove it is absent. Time of day, season, area searched, and attention can affect the record. Compare observation methods before attributing a difference entirely to the habitat. The adopted Iowa boundary does not require naming specific species in specific habitats; children can make useful comparisons with recognizable kinds and drawings. Avoid turning broad groups into a claim that exactly four species live at the garden edge. An ant seen twice is also not necessarily two different ants.
Plan the next activity
- Identify the places and the kinds actually listed in each record.
- Keep the count of kinds separate from the count of individuals.
- State a limited comparison and plan a more consistent observation.
With the teacher, compare suitable land and water habitats through direct observation or selected photographs and recordings. Record the area, time, source, and broad kinds noticed, keeping the observation method comparable where possible. Do not approach water or disturb organisms to collect a count. Repeat observations and add a drawing or clearer label when a category is too broad for the question. Iowa’s clarification encourages local habitat comparisons; a new classroom record can connect this reasoning with the school’s surroundings without pretending the invented example is local evidence.

How does Grade 2 connect to Iowa’s science assessment?
Grade 2 is outside Iowa’s ISASP science testing grades of 5, 8, and 11. Iowa’s 2026–27 required-assessments overview identifies ISASP science in Grades 5, 8, and 11, with an assigned alternate-assessment pathway for eligible students. Follow the school’s current assessment assignment and guidance. This original investigation and the independent practice here do not represent the full assessment or predict a state score. Read the official guidance.
Do many individuals automatically mean many different kinds?
No. Many ants can still represent one recorded kind. Distinguish the variety noticed from the number of individuals.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
Start with the Iowa science standards directory and the 2025 adopted state science document. Read the Grade 2 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
