Use the same pieces to make a different object

Track twelve blocks through two arrangements, distinguish changed shape from added material, and explain a selected Louisiana Grade 2 science expectation.

The Louisiana science standards directory links the official K–12 science standards bundle. Its Grade 2 PDF has a March 2017 footer. Use the Louisiana K–12 science standards bundle (ZIP download) and open 02 Science Standards – Grade 2.pdf inside it for the selected performance expectation and supporting information. This activity selects a Grade 2 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

What changes when twelve blocks are rearranged?

Use twelve identical classroom blocks to build a flat arrangement with three rows of four. Take it apart, keep all the pieces in a tray, and build two rows of six. This original model asks students to track the pieces through the change. The table describes two possible arrangements; students should record their own objects and observations when they carry out the activity.

Explain the evidence or model

The first arrangement has three rows with four blocks in each, making twelve pieces. After disassembly, the tray still holds twelve blocks. The second arrangement has two rows with six in each, also twelve. The overall shape becomes longer and has fewer rows, but no blocks have been added or removed. The evidence for reusing the same set includes counting before and after and tracking the pieces while the first object is taken apart. A new arrangement can be a different object even when its components are the same. Describe both the difference and what remains unchanged.

StagePieces and arrangement
First object12 blocks: 3 rows of 4
Taken apartThe same 12 blocks in a tray
Second object12 blocks: 2 rows of 6

What to check in the explanation

A longer outline does not automatically mean more blocks. Students should compare the counted pieces rather than estimate quantity from overall width. Adding a thirteenth block would create another object, but it would no longer demonstrate rebuilding from exactly the same twelve-piece set. The task also does not prove that the new object is stronger, heavier, or better for every purpose. Those claims would need appropriate observations or tests. The flat row models show the arrangement clearly; they are not a test of a standing wall’s stability.

Plan the next activity

  1. Draw or photograph the first arrangement and record its pieces.
  2. Track the same pieces through taking the object apart.
  3. Build another arrangement and explain the changed structure and unchanged set.

Invite a pair of students to propose a third design using all twelve pieces, then ask another pair to explain how they can check the reused set. The new shape does not need to be a rectangular array. Students can use spoken explanations and drawings; multiplication is a convenient description here, not a requirement for understanding the science. If a block is missing, return to the record and investigate where it went before drawing a conclusion about the set. Read Louisiana’s complete Grade 2 expectation and supporting information in the official bundle, and continue the school’s broader work with materials, organisms, and Earth science.

Louisiana Grade 2 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 2 connect to Louisiana’s science assessments?

Grade 2 is below Louisiana’s LEAP Grades 3–8 science testing range. Use classroom observations and the school’s assessment plan for this grade. The independently published tests and quizzes here have their own directions; they are not official LEAP questions or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does a wider rebuilt object necessarily contain more pieces?

No. Track and count the set. The two-row arrangement is wider but still uses the same twelve blocks as the three-row arrangement.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Louisiana standards directory and download its K–12 science bundle. Open the named grade PDF and read the expectation, clarification, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the Grade 2 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage.
