Tennessee Grade 2 Science Online Center

There is no state science test in grade 1 or grade 2; TCAP science is administered in grades 3-8, with a Biology end-of-course exam in high school. Grade 2 is where the habit of looking closely gets built, so this page keeps it small and hands-on: six short practice tests, 9 skill quizzes, and every Tennessee science standard for this grade, free.

Every grade 2 science standard in the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science. If your Tennessee classroom or report card mentions a code, you will find it here with its full wording.

Physical Science

  • 2.PS2.1Analyze the push or the pullAnalyze the push or the pull that occurs when objects collide or are connected.
  • 2.PS2.2Doing SciencePlan and carry out an investigation to demonstrate how pushing and/or pulling an object affects the motion of the object within a system.
  • 2.PS3.1Demonstrate how a stronger push or pullDemonstrate how a stronger push or pull makes things go faster and how faster collisions cause bigger changes in the shape of colliding objects.
  • 2.PS3.2Energy and HeatMake observations and conduct experiments to provide evidence that friction produces heat and reduces or increases the motion of an object.
  • 2.PS4.1Sound and VibrationsPlan and conduct investigations to demonstrate the cause and effect relationship between vibrating materials and sound.
  • 2.PS4.2Doing ScienceUse tools and materials to design and build a device showing that light and sound travel in waves and can send signals over distance.
  • 2.PS4.3Communicating Over a DistanceObtain information to describe how devices communicate over a distance using light or sound.

Life Science

  • 2.LS1.1The Human BodyUse evidence and observations to explain that many animals use their body parts and senses in different ways to move, protect themselves, and obtain food.
  • 2.LS1.2Obtain and communicate information to classify animalsObtain and communicate information to classify animals as vertebrates or invertebrates based on their physical characteristics.
  • 2.LS1.3Parents and OffspringIdentify ways in which some animals, both parents and offspring, participate in behaviors that help the offspring survive.
  • 2.LS2.1Develop and use models to compare howDevelop and use models to compare how animals depend on their surroundings and other living things to meet their needs.
  • 2.LS2.2Predict what happens to animals whenPredict what happens to animals when the environment changes, such as temperature change, cutting down trees, wildfires, pollution, or drought.

Earth and Space Science

  • 2.ESS1.1Recognize that some of Earth’s natural processesRecognize that some of Earth’s natural processes are cyclical while others have a beginning and an end; some events happen quickly, others slowly.
  • 2.ESS2.1Wind and Water Shape the LandCompare the effectiveness of multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the shape of the land.
  • 2.ESS2.2Habitats and Diversity of LifeObserve and analyze how blowing wind and flowing water can move Earth materials, changing the shape of a landform and affecting habitats.
  • 2.ESS2.3Land and Water on EarthDevelop and compare simple maps of different land areas to observe the shapes and kinds of land and water.
  • 2.ESS2.4Where Water Is FoundUse information from reliable sources to explain that water is found in oceans, rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds, and may be solid or liquid.

Engineering Design

  • 2.ETS1.1Apply an engineering design approach to identifyApply an engineering design approach to identify and solve practical problems.
  • 2.ETS1.2Recognize that to solve a problemRecognize that to solve a problem, one may need to break the problem into parts, address each part, and bring the parts together.
  • 2.ETS1.3Compare and contrast solutions to a designCompare and contrast solutions to a design problem by using evidence to point out strengths and weaknesses of the design.
  • 2.ETS2.1Doing ScienceUse appropriate tools to make observations, record data, and refine design ideas.
  • 2.ETS2.2Predict and explain how human lifePredict and explain how human life and the natural world would be different without current technologies.

Tennessee Grade 2 Science FAQ

Does Tennessee test science in grade 2?

There is no state science test in grade 1 or grade 2; TCAP science is administered in grades 3-8, with a Biology end-of-course exam in high school. The standards on this page are still what grade 2 teachers in Tennessee teach, and they are what later science testing is built on.

Which standards does grade 2 science in Tennessee follow?

Tennessee follows the Tennessee Academic Standards for Science. All 22 of this grade’s standards are listed further down this page with their official codes.

How long are the practice tests?

Each of the six practice tests has 14 questions and no timer. A second grader can work through one in about ten to fifteen minutes, and there is no clock counting down while they think.

My child cannot read the questions yet. Can we still use this?

Yes, and that is how most families use it. The questions are written short and plain so you can read them aloud, and the explanation after each answer is written for you, not for the child. It says why the right answer is right and suggests something you can try together.

Is any of this free?

Yes. Every practice test and quiz on this page is free and needs no login. Progress is saved in your own browser and nowhere else.

What is the fastest way to use this page?

Do practice test 1 together, without helping. Look at the breakdown by science area, pick the weakest one, and do that skill quiz. There are 9 quizzes, one per idea, so you can work on the shaky part instead of everything at once.
