Choose a material for the job it must do

Study Nevada Grade 2 science with a material-choice activity, fair comparisons, worked reasoning, selected state references and related lessons and quizzes.

The Nevada academic standards directory links the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Science, February 2014 DCI arrangements. This document identifies grade-level performance expectations and a Grades 6–8 middle-school band, including clarification statements, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete document with the school’s curriculum plan; these selected references do not cover the entire course. This activity selects a Grade 2 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

A cover that should keep a paper label dry

A class wants a flexible cover that keeps a paper label dry during the same small water-splash test. Compare equally sized pieces of absorbent paper, thin waterproof sheet, and rigid waterproof card. The invented observations below describe these classroom samples only. Select a sample and support the choice with both required properties.

Explain the evidence or model

The thin waterproof sheet fits both requirements in the given record: it bends around the label and keeps it dry in the test. The absorbent paper bends but lets the label become wet. The rigid card keeps the label dry but does not bend around it. Thus choosing by waterproof performance alone would overlook flexibility. Choosing the absorbent paper because it bends would overlook the dry-label requirement. A useful explanation names the intended purpose, cites the two observations for the selected sample, and explains why the alternatives fail one requirement. Keep size, splash, label placement, and observation time alike in a real comparison.

Rigid waterproof cardNoYes

What to check in the explanation

These descriptions concern the tested samples, not every kind of paper, sheet, or card. A dry label after one small splash does not prove a cover works indefinitely in heavy rain. The test also says nothing about price, environmental impact, or strength under pulling. The task uses qualitative observations; the selected Grade 2 expectation limits quantitative assessment measurements to length.

Plan the next activity

  1. State the two requirements before comparing materials.
  2. Keep the comparison conditions alike and record each result.
  3. Choose using both properties, then explain a limitation of the evidence.

For a different job, choose a material to soak up a small spill. Explain why absorbency may now be helpful rather than a reason to reject a sample. The best choice depends on the intended purpose.

Nevada Grade 2 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 2 connect to Nevada’s science assessment?

Grade 2 is not listed as a science accountability assessment grade in the current state overview. The Nevada Department of Education identifies science accountability assessment once in Grade 5, once in Grade 8, and once in high school. Its overview describes computer-based school administration in the spring. Science instruction continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s current directions and assigned pathway, including any alternate assessment requirements. Independently published practice uses its own question counts, timers, topics, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment or a prediction of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Is one property enough to choose the cover?

No. The stated cover must both bend and keep the label dry. In the supplied record, only the thin waterproof sheet meets both requirements.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Nevada academic standards directory and its linked K–12 science document. Read the Grade 2 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
