Use organism needs to explain a habitat match

Learn Nevada Grade 3 science through a habitat-evidence activity, a worked argument, model limits, selected state references and related lessons and quizzes.

The Nevada academic standards directory links the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Science, February 2014 DCI arrangements. This document identifies grade-level performance expectations and a Grades 6–8 middle-school band, including clarification statements, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete document with the school’s curriculum plan; these selected references do not cover the entire course. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Three invented organisms and one habitat

For this model, Organism A can meet its water and shelter needs on dry soil with shaded rock gaps. Organism B needs continuously damp soil. Organism C needs open standing water. The habitat record below lists dry soil, shaded rock gaps, and no standing water. Argue which organism has the strongest match to this habitat and explain what additional evidence a real investigation would need.

Explain the evidence or model

Organism A has the strongest match in this model because the habitat includes both conditions specified for it. The record does not supply the continuously damp soil that B needs or the open standing water C needs. Use the organism’s needs and the habitat’s conditions together rather than choosing by a favorite name. A response could say, “A has the best match to the listed conditions. B’s damp-soil need and C’s standing-water need are not met in this record.” These are invented organisms and deliberately limited information. A real survival argument would also consider food, temperature, other organisms, and observations over time.

What to check in the explanation

A match to two listed needs does not establish that A will survive every condition or reproduce successfully. Nor can this short table alone establish death: organisms might move, shelter, or find resources outside the described area. The complete expectation considers organisms that survive well, less well, or cannot survive in a habitat. This partial model helps organize the needs comparison; it does not replace real evidence for those outcomes.

Plan the next activity

  1. List the organism’s stated needs before looking at the habitat.
  2. Match each need to a recorded habitat condition.
  3. Write a supported claim and name evidence that is still missing.

Change the model so the soil is damp but no standing water is present. Reconsider B’s water condition, and identify which other needs remain unknown. For a real classroom study, observe existing organisms and habitats without moving animals into unsuitable conditions.

Nevada Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 connect to Nevada’s science assessment?

Grade 3 is not listed as a science accountability assessment grade in the current state overview. The Nevada Department of Education identifies science accountability assessment once in Grade 5, once in Grade 8, and once in high school. Its overview describes computer-based school administration in the spring. Science instruction continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s current directions and assigned pathway, including any alternate assessment requirements. Independently published practice uses its own question counts, timers, topics, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment or a prediction of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does matching the listed needs guarantee survival?

No. The invented table describes only selected conditions. A real survival argument needs additional evidence about the organism, its resources, and conditions over time.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Nevada academic standards directory and its linked K–12 science document. Read the Grade 3 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
