Ask a testable question about a magnetic interaction

Use observations to plan a fair comparison of a magnet and a paper clip, distinguish contact from interaction, and explore Michigan Grade 3 science resources.

The Michigan academic standards directory links the Michigan K–12 Science Standards, November 2015 edition. This document identifies grade-level performance expectations and a Grades 6–8 middle-school band, including Michigan-specific expectations marked in its pages. Read the complete document with the school’s curriculum plan; these selected references do not cover the entire course. This activity selects a Grade 3 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Did the magnet have to touch the paper clip?

A teacher-controlled demonstration places a paper clip on a smooth surface. A magnet approaches without touching the clip. The clip begins moving toward it before contact. Students propose comparing the gap at which movement begins for two teacher-selected magnets. What question could this comparison investigate, and what would need to stay alike? This is an illustrative scenario, not a report of measured magnet strengths.

Explain the evidence or model

The initial observation supports that these objects can interact while separated. A useful question is whether the two selected magnets begin moving the same clip at different measured gaps under the same arrangement. Use the same clip, surface, magnet orientation, approach method, and starting position. Measure the gap between the nearest surfaces when motion begins and repeat the comparison. Different gaps could provide evidence about this particular setup, but the gap alone does not measure every aspect of a magnet’s strength. The teacher’s record should distinguish the magnet’s motion from the clip’s response and confirm that the objects had not touched.

What to check in the explanation

A clip pushed by the magnet after contact does not demonstrate the separated interaction being studied. A tilted surface, a hand moving the desk, or a different clip could also change when the clip moves. These possibilities belong in the plan, not in a claim that any movement must be magnetic. Ask students to state which two objects interact and what observation would answer their question. Do not generalize that every metal object is attracted to every magnet. The demonstration concerns selected materials and a specific magnetic interaction. The teacher chooses and controls suitable equipment.

Plan the next activity

  1. State a question that can be answered with observations.
  2. List the comparison variable and conditions kept alike.
  3. Record repeated gaps and explain what the results would support.

Draw the planned arrangement and mark where the gap would be measured. Before collecting data, predict how the comparison might turn out and label the prediction as untested. After a teacher conducts the investigation, use the actual results to revise the explanation. If trials vary, report that variation rather than select only a preferred result. A second question might concern magnet orientation, with the magnet itself kept the same. Change one feature at a time and explain why. Use the magnets lesson for further practice, keeping questions and evidence connected.

Michigan Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 connect to Michigan’s science assessment?

Grade 3 is not listed as an M-STEP science assessment grade in the currently linked 2025–26 guide. The guide lists M-STEP science in Grades 5 and 8, and in Grade 11 as part of the Michigan Merit Examination. Science instruction continues in other grades. Read the current MDE updates and school directions for later changes and the assigned assessment pathway. The independently published practice here has its own question counts, timers, topics, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment or a prediction of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does a separated magnetic interaction mean that nothing is causing the motion?

No. The selected magnet and paper clip can interact before touching. Compare conditions and observations to investigate the interaction rather than assume contact is required.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Michigan academic standards directory and its linked K–12 science document. Read the Grade 3 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
