Investigate a magnetic effect without contact

Test a magnet and paper clip at different separations, distinguish movement from contact, and explain a fair comparison with California Grade 3 references.

The state’s current directory links the adopted California Next Generation Science Standards. Read the full performance expectations, examples, and boundaries alongside this selected activity.

Must two objects touch before one can move the other?

Place a steel paper clip on a smooth table. An adult moves one classroom bar magnet slowly toward it without touching it. Record whether the clip starts moving while a gap remains. Repeat from the same starting position. For a distance comparison, mark several separations and hold the magnet still at each. Keep magnets and small clips under adult control; use a large classroom magnet rather than loose small magnets.

Explain the result

If the clip starts moving toward the magnet while the objects are separated, the observation is evidence of an interaction without contact. The clip’s change in motion shows that the forces on it are not balanced at that moment. The magnet did not need to bump it. Results may differ with the gap, magnet, clip, and surface. A marked-distance trial asks whether this setup produces an observable effect at each separation; it does not measure the magnetic force directly.

What to check in the explanation

The table’s friction matters. A clip that stays still may experience a magnetic pull too small to overcome the opposing effect, so “no motion” is not proof of no interaction. Do not replace the clip or magnet between distance trials and call distance the only changed feature. Magnets do not attract every material; test observations should be described for the objects actually used.

Plan the next activity

  1. Observe one approach trial and identify whether movement began before contact.
  2. Test marked separations with the same magnet, clip, and surface.
  3. State a claim, give the observed movement as evidence, and explain one limit of the setup.

Repeat the procedure on a different surface as a separate investigation, keeping the separation fixed. Explain why that is a new comparison rather than another distance trial. Students can then ask a testable question about the setup and identify which feature they will change next.

California Grade 3 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 3 science connect to CAST?

Grade 3 is outside the CAST summative testing grades. Classroom learning and any interim assessments are separate. The activities and quizzes here are independently published learning resources, not official state assessments. Consult the school and state guidance for testing arrangements. Read the official guidance.

Does a stationary clip prove the magnet has no effect?

No. A magnetic pull may be present without producing visible movement in that setup. Surface friction and other forces affect the result. State what was observed and avoid claiming more than the test establishes.
