Model a seed catching on an animal’s coat

Compare two simple seed-carrying models, record which carries more paper seeds, and explain the model’s limits using California Grade 2 science references.

Which model can carry paper seeds away?

Use small crumpled paper pieces as model seeds, a smooth fabric strip, and a strip with a hook-and-loop surface. An adult holds each strip and presses it onto the same number of pieces in the same tray. Lift each strip, move it across the same short distance, and count pieces still attached. Use large enough pieces for the classroom’s age and supervision needs. These materials model catching and carrying; they are not real seeds or animal fur.

Explain the result

Imagine that the smooth strip carries one piece and the hook-and-loop strip carries six. In that trial, the second model carries more pieces over the chosen distance. Its surface provides more places for paper to catch. This offers a way to think about some seeds attaching to an animal’s outer covering and moving away from the parent plant. The model does not show every way seeds travel, and not every seed has a catching structure.

What to check in the explanation

Pressing one strip harder or sweeping it through a larger pile changes more than the surface being compared. Keep the starting number, motion, and distance alike. If pieces fall off, record that rather than counting only how many attached at the beginning. One trial suggests a result; repeat the comparison before calling one design dependable.

Plan the next activity

  1. Predict which surface will carry more pieces and name the feature behind the prediction.
  2. Run matched trials and record how many pieces reach the finish.
  3. Explain how the model resembles animal-assisted movement and name one important difference.

Compare the model with teacher-selected photographs of burrs or other attaching seeds. Students can sketch a feature that helps a seed catch. Discuss how a seed can be released elsewhere, without claiming that this paper test proves how far a real seed would travel or whether it would grow.

California Grade 2 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 2 science connect to CAST?

Grade 2 is outside the CAST summative testing grades. Classroom learning and any interim assessments are separate. The activities and quizzes here are independently published learning resources, not official state assessments. Consult the school and state guidance for testing arrangements. Read the official guidance.

Does a good seed model have to look exactly like a seed?

No. It should show the feature or process being studied clearly. This model represents catching and carrying, while leaving out real seed structure, growth, and travel over long distances.

Where are the complete California science requirements?

Read the linked Grade 2 state science document. This page provides a worked investigation, selected references, and topic navigation; it does not certify that every resource covers every requirement. Read the official guidance.
