Build Something New from the Same Pieces

Use an invented building record to explain how one object can be taken apart and the same pieces assembled into another arrangement.

The current South Carolina science page identifies the 2021 standards, approved June 14, 2021. This activity selects a reference from the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Science Standards 2021. Check the school’s implementation plan and the full chosen edition. This activity selects a Grade 2 South Carolina science expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

The South Carolina science standards combine science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the clarification and assessment boundary as well as the performance expectation. Read the complete grade objectives alongside the school’s course, including investigations, models, evidence, and explanations. The general lesson library below may include review or enrichment beyond this grade’s course. This original activity is a focused starting point, not a complete curriculum crosswalk.

Six blocks, two arrangements

A class models an observation record for six identical large building blocks. First, the blocks make a tower of three levels, with two blocks per level. The class takes the tower apart, counts the blocks, and makes two low walls of three blocks each. No blocks are added, removed, cut, or glued. Explain what changes and which observations would support the claim that the same pieces were used.

Explain the evidence or model

The arrangement changes from one three-level tower to two low walls. The first arrangement has two blocks on each of three levels, six in all. The second has three blocks in each of two walls, also six in all. The middle count records all six blocks after disassembly. That record, together with keeping those blocks on one tray and watching the rebuilding, supports an account that the same pieces were rearranged. A matching total alone would not prove identity if someone could replace pieces unnoticed. The blocks retain their stated size and shape while their positions and grouping change. This illustrates how a small set of pieces can form different objects; it does not claim that every object can be taken apart or reassembled without damage.

StageArrangement and count
BeforeOne tower: three levels of two blocks
Taken apartSix blocks kept together on one tray
AfterTwo low walls of three blocks each

What to check in the explanation

The record is invented and the block identities are stipulated. Use large, age-appropriate classroom pieces under adult supervision. A picture of a finished tower and a finished wall without the disassembly record would supply less evidence about what happened between them. No chemical change, microscopic structure, or measured mass is part of this example.

Plan the next activity

  1. Observe and describe the first arrangement.
  2. Take it apart and keep a record of the pieces.
  3. Build another arrangement and explain what changed and what stayed the same.

With teacher-selected large pieces, make a different arrangement using all of them. Photograph or draw the first arrangement, separated pieces, and second arrangement. Explain the change using the observed steps, then discuss why a pile of torn paper would present a different rebuilding problem.

South Carolina Grade 2 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 2 connect to South Carolina’s science assessment?

The SCDE SC READY overview identifies science assessments for Grades 4 and 6 in its August 2026 table. Grade 2 is outside that listed science testing range. Use classroom observations, explanations, and the school’s directions rather than treat independent practice as a state test. The overview still contains some older 2025–26 participation language; check current school guidance for later changes. Independently published practice has its own tools, timing, questions, and scoring. Read the official guidance.

Does an equal number of pieces prove they are the same pieces?

Not by itself. Observe the disassembly and rebuilding, keep the pieces together, and record any additions or replacements. Count and identity answer different questions.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?
