South Carolina Grade 8 Science Topics

These are the 19 science standards South Carolina sets for grade 8, from the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Science Standards, grouped and ordered exactly the way the state's own standards document groups them. Each one is tagged with its official code so you can trace it straight back to the state document.

PS Physical Science

  • 8-PS2-1Forces, Motion, and InteractionsApply Newton's third law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects
  • 8-PS2-2Forces, Motion, and InteractionsPlan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object
  • 8-PS2-3Forces, Motion, and InteractionsAnalyze and interpret data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces
  • 8-PS2-4Gravity and Object MotionConstruct and present arguments using evidence to support the claim that gravitational interactions are attractive and depend on the masses of interacting objects and the distance between them
  • 8-PS2-5Forces, Motion, and InteractionsConduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact
  • 8-PS4-1Light, Sound, and Wave BehaviorUsing mathematical representations, describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave
  • 8-PS4-3Light, Sound, and Wave BehaviorCommunicate information to support the claim that digital devices are used to improve our understanding of how waves transmit information

LS Life Science

  • 8-LS1-4Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesUse arguments, based on empirical evidence and scientific reasoning, to support an explanation for how characteristic animal behaviors and specialized plant structures affect the probability of successful reproduction of animals and plants respectively
  • 8-LS1-5Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesConstruct a scientific explanation based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms
  • 8-LS3-1Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesDevelop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism
  • 8-LS3-2Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesDevelop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation
  • 8-LS4-1Earth Materials, Rocks, Fossils, and LandformsAnalyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth under the assumption that natural laws operated in the past as they do today
  • 8-LS4-2Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesApply scientific ideas to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and between modern and fossil organisms to infer their ancestral relationships
  • 8-LS4-4Cells, Body Systems, and GeneticsConstruct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individual's probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment
  • 8-LS4-5Organism Needs, Structures, and Life CyclesGather and synthesize information about technologies that have changed the way humans influence the inheritance of desired traits in organisms
  • 8-LS4-6Cells, Body Systems, and GeneticsUse mathematical representations to support explanations of how natural selection may lead to increases and decreases of specific traits in populations over time

ESS Earth and Space Science

  • 8-ESS1-1Sun, Moon, Earth, Stars, and Space SystemsDevelop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, tides, and seasons
  • 8-ESS1-2Sun, Moon, Earth, Stars, and Space SystemsDevelop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system
  • 8-ESS1-3Sun, Moon, Earth, Stars, and Space SystemsEvaluate information to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system

South Carolina Grade 8 Science FAQ

Does South Carolina test science in grade 8?

No. South Carolina gives SCPASS Science in grades 4 and 6, so grade 8 students do not sit a state science test this year. South Carolina also gives a high school biology test. The standards on this page are still the ones grade 8 teachers teach, and they are what the next science test builds on.

Which standards does grade 8 science in South Carolina follow?

South Carolina follows the South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Science Standards, published by the South Carolina Department of Education. All 19 of this grade's standards are listed further down the page with their official codes.

How long are the practice tests?

Each of the six practice tests has 40 questions and a 70-minute timer. The timer auto-submits at zero and you get your score, a breakdown by science area, and a written explanation for every question.

Is any of this free?

Yes, every practice test, quiz, and flashcard set on this page is free and needs no login. Your progress is saved in your own browser and nowhere else.

What is the fastest way to use this page?

Take practice test 1 cold. Look at the topic breakdown, pick the weakest science area, and do that skill quiz. Then read the quick review for that area and come back for practice test 2.
