Plan a Fair Force-and-Mass Investigation
Plan separate tests of force and mass, identify controlled variables and useful motion measurements, and use Rhode Island middle-school science lessons.
The current Rhode Island science page identifies NGSS adopted in 2013. This activity selects a reference from the Next Generation Science Standards arranged by disciplinary core idea. Check the school’s implementation plan and the full chosen edition. The selected MS expectation belongs to the Grades 6–8 band. The school determines its grade placement and sequence. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.
NGSS combines science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the clarification and assessment boundary as well as the performance expectation. Read the complete grade objectives alongside the school’s course, including investigations, models, evidence, and explanations. The general lesson library below may include review or enrichment beyond this grade’s course. This original activity is a focused starting point, not a complete curriculum crosswalk.
Changing two variables makes the answer unclear
A proposed cart test uses a light cart with a small pull first, then a heavier cart with a larger pull. The learner wants to find how mass affects changes in motion. Explain why the comparison cannot isolate mass. Plan one comparison for mass and a separate one for net force, using motion measurements rather than only an impression of speed.
Explain the evidence or model
The proposed comparison changes mass and pull together, so either difference could affect the cart’s motion. To study mass, use different total cart masses while arranging the same measured net force, starting condition, surface, and direction. To study net force, hold total mass fixed and vary the measured net force. Record position at equal time intervals or use suitable motion equipment to compare how velocity changes over equal times. Repeat trials to examine variability. Friction is part of net force, so equal applied pulls do not automatically give equal net forces if friction changes. A useful plan explains how the force conditions will be checked, not only what the experimenter hopes to keep the same.
| Question | Change | Keep comparable and check |
|---|---|---|
| Effect of mass | Total cart mass | Measured net force, start, surface, direction, interval |
| Effect of net force | Measured net force | Total mass, start, surface, direction, interval |
What to check in the explanation
MS-PS2-2 is a Grades 6–8 band requirement, not a separate Rhode Island Grade 8-only assignment. Its stated assessment boundary limits motion to one dimension and excludes trigonometry. Use low-speed teacher-approved equipment and adult setup. The task provides no actual motion data and therefore no experimental conclusion. A cart’s final speed alone, without starting conditions and elapsed time, does not establish how its motion changed.
Plan the next activity
- Choose whether the question is about mass or net force.
- Name the changed variable, controlled conditions, and motion measurement.
- Plan repeat trials and a check of force conditions before interpreting results.
For an imagined mass comparison, both carts start at rest and experience the same measured net force for the same duration. Predict which would have the larger change in velocity and explain the prediction: the lower-mass cart. Keep that prediction separate from a measured result. Then explain how unequal friction would weaken the proposed comparison.

How does Grade 8 connect to Rhode Island’s science assessment?
Rhode Island’s NGSA overview lists science assessments in Grades 5, 8, and 11. Grade 5 assesses the NGSS Grades 3–5 band; Grade 8 assesses the Grades 6–8 band; Grade 11 assesses high-school expectations. Grade 8 is a listed NGSA testing grade. Use the school’s sequence and current assessment directions. Independently published practice has its own tools, timing, questions, and scoring; its result does not establish an NGSA performance level. Read the official guidance.
Is the same applied pull always the same net force?
No. Net force combines the forces acting on the object, including friction. If friction differs, equal pulls may not produce equal net forces; the investigation needs to check that condition.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
