Distinguish Matter Cycling from Energy Flow

Build a pond ecosystem model with living and nonliving parts, distinguish matter cycling from energy flow, and use Rhode Island middle-school science references.

The current Rhode Island science page identifies NGSS adopted in 2013. This activity selects a reference from the Next Generation Science Standards arranged by disciplinary core idea. Check the school’s implementation plan and the full chosen edition. The selected MS expectation belongs to the Grades 6–8 band. The school determines its grade placement and sequence. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

NGSS combines science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the clarification and assessment boundary as well as the performance expectation. Read the complete grade objectives alongside the school’s course, including investigations, models, evidence, and explanations. The general lesson library below may include review or enrichment beyond this grade’s course. This original activity is a focused starting point, not a complete curriculum crosswalk.

A pond model needs more than a food chain

An invented qualitative model begins with sunlight, algae, a small consumer that eats algae, and a larger consumer that eats the small consumer. It omits decomposers, water, air, and energy reaching the surroundings. Revise the model using two clearly labeled kinds of arrows: movement of matter and transfer of energy. Set a boundary around the modeled pond and show sunlight entering.

Explain the evidence or model

The food chain traces one path of food matter and stored energy through consumers. Add decomposers receiving dead material from producers and consumers; connect matter returned to nonliving parts of the system with producers taking in materials. Include air and water rather than drawing a closed loop made only of animals. Show energy entering with sunlight, transferred through organisms, and reaching the surroundings as thermal energy. Matter cycles through living and nonliving components, while energy flows through the system. Use a key so an arrow never silently switches between those two meanings. A boundary makes it clear which transfers are inside the modeled pond and which cross into or out of it.

Two arrow keys for an invented ecosystem model
Arrow typeExample connectionMeaning
Matter movementDead material → decomposers → nonliving materialsMaterials move and can be used again
Energy transferSunlight → producers → consumersEnergy enters and passes through organisms
Energy transferOrganisms → surroundingsThermal energy leaves the modeled living pathway

What to check in the explanation

Do not draw thermal energy flowing back into sunlight to close an energy cycle. Matter and energy have different roles. The qualitative picture gives no exact amount of matter or energy at any step and does not require a chemical-equation account of respiration or photosynthesis. MS-LS2-3 is a Grades 6–8 band expectation; the school selects its Grade 7 placement and additional learning. The model is invented, not a survey of an actual Rhode Island pond.

Plan the next activity

  1. Draw a boundary and a key for the two arrow meanings.
  2. Include producers, consumers, decomposers, and relevant nonliving parts.
  3. Trace one matter path and a separate energy path, naming inputs and outputs.

Ask a partner to trace what happens to matter in a dead leaf and to energy once held in that leaf. Revise an ambiguous arrow after hearing the explanation. Use a teacher-selected actual ecosystem example to check which organisms and nonliving components belong in a more specific model.

Rhode Island Grade 7 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 7 connect to Rhode Island’s science assessment?

Rhode Island’s NGSA overview lists science assessments in Grades 5, 8, and 11. Grade 5 assesses the NGSS Grades 3–5 band; Grade 8 assesses the Grades 6–8 band; Grade 11 assesses high-school expectations. Grade 7 is not one of those listed testing grades. Use the school’s sequence and current assessment directions. Independently published practice has its own tools, timing, questions, and scoring; its result does not establish an NGSA performance level. Read the official guidance.

Should an ecosystem model close an energy loop?

No. Energy enters and flows through the system, with transfers to the surroundings. Matter can cycle through living and nonliving components; use different labels for these processes.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read Rhode Island’s science page and the complete NGSS grade or band expectation, including clarifications, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. This activity covers one selected focus, not the complete course. Read the official guidance.
