Trace plant-building matter separately from sunlight energy
Explain carbon dioxide, water, sugars, and light in a photosynthesis model, avoid a soil-as-food misconception, and use a selected DC middle-school reference.
The DC science standards directory identifies NGSS adoption in December 2013 and links the standards publisher. Use the Publisher NGSS document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. NGSS middle-school expectations use a Grades 6–8 band. The activity here is a suggested study focus; consult the school’s plan for its local grade placement.
Correct a model that turns sunlight into plant matter
A student draws sunlight entering a leaf and labels it “new matter for the plant.” They also label soil as the main material that becomes the plant’s sugar. Revise this conceptual model so it identifies matter inputs and products separately from the energy source. The model is an explanation task, not a report of an experiment.
Explain the evidence or model
In photosynthesis, plants use light energy to make sugars from carbon dioxide and water, and oxygen is released. Carbon dioxide reaches leaves from the air, while roots typically take up water. These matter inputs contain atoms that are rearranged into products; sunlight supplies energy rather than the atoms in the sugar. Plants can use sugars to build other materials or release stored energy through cellular respiration. Mineral nutrients from soil also matter to growth, but they are not a substitute for carbon dioxide and water in the photosynthesis model.
| Component | Role in the model |
|---|---|
| Carbon dioxide and water | Matter inputs |
| Sugars and released oxygen | Matter products |
| Light | Energy source for photosynthesis |
| Soil minerals | Nutrients for growth; not the main sugar inputs |
What to check in the explanation
A plant gaining mass while its soil loses little mass can motivate a question about where building materials come from, but that observation alone does not prove every part of the photosynthesis process. The model should be supported by relevant evidence and established science rather than inventing measurements. Do not claim that plants never use oxygen or only respire at night; respiration also occurs in plants. Likewise, the phrase “sunlight becomes sugar” can hide the difference between energy transfer and the source of matter.
Plan the next activity
- Mark carbon dioxide and water as matter inputs and identify sugars and oxygen as products.
- Draw a separate light-energy arrow and explain why it does not represent an added matter input.
- Describe how sugar can contribute to growth and how the model connects with energy use by organisms.
Extend the model to a plant eaten by an animal. Track how matter can move into the animal and how energy originally captured from light can enter the food pathway. Explain that matter cycles while energy transfers through the system; the arrows do not all mean the same thing. For a classroom investigation, decide what evidence a change in light or carbon dioxide could provide and what other conditions would need control. Detailed biochemical reaction mechanisms are beyond this selected middle-school focus. Confirm the Grade 7 course sequence with the school.

How does Grade 7 connect to DC’s science assessment?
Grade 7 is outside DC’s NGSS summative assessment grades. DC CAPE Next begins in spring 2027 and lists science assessments in Grades 5, 8, and high-school biology. OSSE says the educational standards have not changed. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.
Does sunlight supply the matter that becomes sugar?
No. Light supplies energy. Carbon dioxide and water supply matter used to make sugars in the photosynthesis model.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
Start with the DC science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Middle-school MS expectations apply across Grades 6–8; confirm the local sequence with the school. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
