Identify equal interaction forces on different objects

Use a tabletop-cart collision model to compare bumper evidence, distinguish paired forces from net force, and follow selected DC middle-school NGSS references.

The DC science standards directory identifies NGSS adoption in December 2013 and links the standards publisher. Use the Publisher NGSS document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. NGSS middle-school expectations use a Grades 6–8 band. The activity here is a suggested study focus; consult the school’s plan for its local grade placement.

Compare two bumper models without reversing the force pair

Two small classroom carts collide along a straight track. The carts have different masses. An invented model comparison holds cart masses, approach speeds, and track conditions steady while changing only the bumper. The table describes relative peak contact force and contact duration. Choose a promising bumper for a lower-peak-force goal, and explain the paired forces during contact.

Explain the evidence or model

At each moment of contact, Cart A exerts a force on Cart B equal in strength and opposite in direction to the force B exerts on A. These forces act on different carts, so they do not cancel as two forces on one cart. The table suggests Bumper B for the stated goal because its lower peak contact force meets that criterion in the model. Both carts experience the same contact-force strength at a given instant, including when their masses differ. Their motion changes can still differ because mass and other forces affect each cart’s response.

Invented comparison under the same cart conditions
BumperContact durationRelative peak contact force
AShorterHigher on both carts
BLongerLower on both carts

What to check in the explanation

“The heavier cart hits harder” confuses the interaction-force pair with the objects’ motion responses. “Equal forces mean neither cart moves” puts forces on different objects into a single object’s net-force account. A longer contact time does not, by itself, prove that every bumper will reduce the peak force; here that conclusion depends on the supplied comparison and controlled conditions. The table does not measure injuries, damage to real vehicles, or the average force across a complete collision.

Plan the next activity

  1. Draw and label the force of A on B on Cart B, then the force of B on A on Cart A.
  2. Compare the two bumper observations against the lower-peak-force goal.
  3. Identify the controls and another criterion that would need testing before accepting a design.

Plan repeated, teacher-managed trials with low-energy classroom carts and suitable measuring tools or a simulation. Keep approach speed and masses comparable, and record what the available tools can actually measure. A motion video alone does not directly give the peak contact force. Add another design criterion, such as staying attached during repeated trials, and evaluate it separately. This activity addresses part of the middle-school NGSS band; it does not establish a certified real-vehicle safety design or a complete Grade 8 standards assignment.

DC Grade 8 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 8 connect to DC’s science assessment?

Grade 8 is a DC NGSS summative assessment grade. DC CAPE Next begins in spring 2027 and lists science assessments in Grades 5, 8, and high-school biology. OSSE says the educational standards have not changed. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Why do equal collision forces not cancel each other?

The two interaction forces act on different carts. To determine one cart’s net force, consider the forces acting on that cart, not its force on the other cart.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the DC science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Middle-school MS expectations apply across Grades 6–8; confirm the local sequence with the school. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
