Separate water’s movement from the energy driving a change

Study New Hampshire Grade 8 science with water-cycle models, energy and gravity explanations, middle-school NGSS references and related lessons.

New Hampshire’s current school-approval rules, Ed 306.36, require local science competencies and curricula aligned with the 2017 Next Generation Science Standards. The selected references here were checked in the original publisher’s Next Generation Science Standards, September 2017 DCI arrangements. Read the complete performance expectations, clarifications, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts with the school’s course plan. New Hampshire’s middle-school science expectations use a Grades 6–8 band. The activity here is a suggested study focus; consult the school’s plan for its local grade placement.

Separate water’s movement from the energy driving a change

Draw a conceptual water-cycle route from a lake through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and downhill runoff back to the lake. Label water’s state along the route. Then show where energy from the Sun and the force of gravity contribute. Explain why this route is only one possible pathway through Earth’s systems.

Explain the evidence or model

Solar energy contributes to warming water and evaporation, changing liquid water into water vapor in the atmosphere. Cooling conditions allow water vapor to condense into liquid droplets. Precipitation brings water toward the surface, and gravity contributes to its downward movement and downhill runoff. Water remains matter through these changes; sunlight is an energy input, not a new kind of water. Draw separate labels for the process, water state, and driving influence. The route can return water to the lake, but some may enter soil, groundwater, ice, or living organisms instead. A useful model can show branching routes without insisting that every water molecule follows the same loop.

What to check in the explanation

Cloud droplets are not the same as invisible water vapor. Evaporation can occur without boiling, so the diagram should not require a boiling lake. Gravity does not supply all the energy for evaporation, and solar heating does not replace gravity’s role in falling precipitation or downhill water flow. The selected expectation allows conceptual models and does not assess quantitative latent-heat calculations.

Plan the next activity

  1. Label the water states and process arrows separately.
  2. Mark an energy input and gravity-related movement without confusing them.
  3. Add another possible route and explain the model’s limits.

Extend the model with groundwater storage or freezing and melting. Explain what changes in state, what moves between locations, and what additional evidence would refine the model. Check the school’s sequence for this Grades 6–8 expectation.

New Hampshire Grade 8 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 8 connect to New Hampshire’s science assessment?

Grade 8 is a general NH SAS science assessment grade in the reviewed manual. The 2025–2026 public manual identifies science in Grade 5, Grade 8, and the third year of high school. Grade 5 covers Grades 3–5 content and Grade 8 covers Grades 6–8 content. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway and current administration directions, including any alternate assessment requirements. The reviewed edition is 2025–2026; confirm later-year directions with the school. Independent practice has its own timing, topics, and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Does every water molecule follow the same cycle route?

No. Water can follow multiple routes and remain in different reservoirs for different lengths of time. The drawn lake–atmosphere–runoff route is one conceptual pathway.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read New Hampshire’s school-approval rules, Ed 306.36, and the original publisher’s 2017 NGSS document. Middle-school MS expectations apply across Grades 6–8; confirm the local sequence with the school. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
