Test whether a shared pattern sends the intended message

Explore New Hampshire Grade 4 science with communication codes, design comparisons, selected NGSS references, related lessons and independent quizzes.

New Hampshire’s current school-approval rules, Ed 306.36, require local science competencies and curricula aligned with the 2017 Next Generation Science Standards. The selected references here were checked in the original publisher’s Next Generation Science Standards, September 2017 DCI arrangements. Read the complete performance expectations, clarifications, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts with the school’s course plan. This activity selects a Grade 4 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Test whether a shared pattern sends the intended message

A class needs to send three messages across a room: start, wait, and finish. Design A uses one, two, or three taps respectively. Design B uses a short–long pair for start, long–short for wait, and long–long for finish. Compare the designs using clarity and successful decoding. The invented trial record assumes both sender and receiver have the key and can distinguish short from long.

Explain the evidence or model

Both designs represent messages with agreed patterns. In the supplied trials, A has seven correctly decoded messages out of ten and B has nine out of ten. Under these trial conditions, B has the better recorded decoding result. The record supports choosing B for another test, not declaring it universally best. A listener who misses one tap can confuse a count code. An order code also fails if the listener cannot distinguish its elements or misses a signal. Write each key clearly and give a pause between complete messages so receivers know where a new pattern begins. Generating both solutions before testing is part of the design work.

DesignCorrectly decodedIncorrectly decoded
A: tap counts73
B: ordered pairs91

What to check in the explanation

More symbols do not automatically mean a clearer code. Compare both designs under matching distance, noise, practice, and message counts. These are invented trial outcomes, not actual classroom evidence. The selected expectation concerns generating and comparing solutions that use patterns to transfer information. It does not require treating this simple code as a description of how every digital device works.

Plan the next activity

  1. Write two complete keys and check that no two messages share a code.
  2. Send a mixed sequence under matching conditions and record the receiver’s answer.
  3. Compare accuracy and explain a possible source of errors.

Repeat with a visual paper-symbol code when sound is unsuitable. Compare its results using the same message list and a suitable viewing distance. Ask whether an improvement in one setting introduces a difficulty in another.

New Hampshire Grade 4 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 4 connect to New Hampshire’s science assessment?

Grade 4 is not a general NH SAS science assessment grade listed in the reviewed manual. The 2025–2026 public manual identifies science in Grade 5, Grade 8, and the third year of high school. Grade 5 covers Grades 3–5 content and Grade 8 covers Grades 6–8 content. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway and current administration directions, including any alternate assessment requirements. The reviewed edition is 2025–2026; confirm later-year directions with the school. Independent practice has its own timing, topics, and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Why does everyone need the same key?

A pattern carries the intended message only when sender and receiver agree on its meaning. Clear separation between messages also helps decoding.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read New Hampshire’s school-approval rules, Ed 306.36, and the original publisher’s 2017 NGSS document. Read the Grade 4 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
