Compare model solutions using evidence and design limits

Evaluate two original flood-impact designs, distinguish a model result from a real safety decision, and check a selected Hawaiʻi Grade 4 science reference.

The Hawaiʻi science standards directory identifies NGSS as the science standards and links the standards publisher. Use the Publisher NGSS document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 4 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Which model protects the paper building under the stated test?

In an invented tray-model trial, water enters along one marked route toward a paper building. Design A places a small barrier upstream; Design B raises the building on a platform. Across three equal-water trials, A keeps the building dry twice and B keeps it dry three times. Both fit the stated materials allowance. Compare the observed protection, then identify information needed before choosing a solution for any actual place. These model results are invented teaching data.

Explain the evidence or model

Under these trial conditions, B kept the paper building dry more consistently. That is evidence for B against the stated protection criterion, not proof that B is best under every flood condition. Compare the same amount and route of water, the same building model, and the same observation rule to make the trials useful. A barrier may also redirect water toward another part of the tray; include that effect when judging the design rather than measure only the original building.

What to check in the explanation

Three successful model trials cannot certify the safety of a real building. Actual floods differ in depth, flow, debris, duration, and surrounding conditions, which this tray does not represent. Keep the evidence claim limited to the model and recorded trials. Raising a model and blocking a flow route are different approaches; neither prevents the natural process itself. The activity compares reduced impacts, not elimination of all hazards.

Plan the next activity

  1. State the protection criterion and materials constraint before comparing.
  2. Use matching test conditions and record more than one trial.
  3. Explain the result together with side effects and model limits.

Repeat the model comparison with a different water route while keeping other conditions stable. Check whether the apparent advantage remains, and add a nearby paper structure to observe redirected water. Use the comparison to revise a classroom design. For actual flood preparedness, use current official guidance and responsible adults rather than apply a tray result as a safety recommendation. This is one hazard-design focus within the wider Grade 4 course.

Hawaiʻi Grade 4 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 4 connect to Hawaiʻi’s science assessment?

Grade 4 is outside the Grade 5 and Grade 8 science-assessment grades listed in the state overview. The state assessment overview lists science assessment in Grades 5 and 8 and the Biology 1 end-of-course assessment. Follow the school’s assigned assessment pathway and current guidance. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Can successful tray-model trials prove a real building is flood-safe?

No. They show how the model performed under its recorded conditions. A real safety decision requires information and guidance beyond this simplified classroom model.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Hawaiʻi science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 4 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
