Follow food energy back through a simple model

Trace an original Sun-to-plant-to-animal model, distinguish energy transfer from matter, and use a selected Hawaiʻi Grade 5 science reference.

The Hawaiʻi science standards directory identifies NGSS as the science standards and links the standards publisher. Use the Publisher NGSS document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 5 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

How can food energy connect a caterpillar with the Sun?

A classroom diagram shows sunlight reaching a leaf, a caterpillar eating part of that leaf, and the caterpillar growing and moving. A student labels the last arrow “The caterpillar eats sunlight.” Revise the labels so the diagram explains how energy reaches the animal through food. The drawing represents a simple feeding pathway, not every interaction in a garden.

Explain the evidence or model

The plant captures energy from sunlight while making food. When the caterpillar eats plant material, energy stored in that food becomes available to the animal. The caterpillar can use food energy in processes involved in movement, growth, and body repair. An arrow from the Sun to the plant can represent the energy source; an arrow from plant material to the caterpillar represents transfer through feeding. The animal does not obtain that food energy by eating sunlight directly.

What to check in the explanation

Energy and matter need distinct labels. The Sun supplies the energy source in this pathway, but sunlight is not the material of the caterpillar’s body. Food also provides matter that an organism uses and rearranges. The simple energy diagram does not describe every material an organism needs, all feeding links, or every destination of transferred energy. Do not claim that all the energy stays stored in the animal or that the plant captures all incoming sunlight.

Plan the next activity

  1. Name what each arrow represents before using the diagram.
  2. Trace the food-energy pathway backward from the animal.
  3. Separate statements about energy from statements about body material.

Add a bird that eats the caterpillar and explain the longer pathway without drawing a direct feeding arrow from the Sun to the bird. Then compare an energy arrow with a separate arrow showing transfer of food material. Discuss which question each version answers. Use models to support the explanation rather than memorize a chain of names; this selected activity is one part of the wider Grade 5 course.

Hawaiʻi Grade 5 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 5 connect to Hawaiʻi’s science assessment?

Grade 5 is a grade listed for Hawaiʻi’s science assessment. The state assessment overview lists science assessment in Grades 5 and 8 and the Biology 1 end-of-course assessment. Follow the school’s assigned assessment pathway and current guidance. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does an animal obtain food energy by eating sunlight directly?

No. In this model the plant captures solar energy, and the animal obtains energy through food. Label those transfers separately from the matter used to build its body.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Hawaiʻi science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 5 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
