Show how ice and water connect in a system model

Alaska’s fifth-grade Earth-systems reference explicitly includes the cryosphere—the ice system. Students can begin with a model connecting two systems, then use arrows and labels to explain the interaction. The grade also explores matter, ecosystems, gravity, sunlight, and patterns in the sky. Grade 5 is an Alaska Science Assessment grade.

A useful model shows a connection, not just two labels

Draw a simple imaginary mountain glacier with meltwater entering a stream. Label the ice ‘cryosphere’ and the stream ‘hydrosphere.’ Add an arrow from melting ice to liquid water. The drawing is an original teaching model; it does not describe the measured behavior of a named glacier or forecast its future.

A model of a process, without measured quantities.

Explain the result

Explain the arrow: ‘As some glacier ice melts, that water joins the stream. The ice system and the water system are connected.’ This shows an interaction between two systems. A drawing containing an ice label and a river label without a connecting process is a list of parts, not yet an explanation. Keep the model focused before adding land, air, and living things.

What to check in a student’s explanation

If a student says the water vanished when the ice melted, revisit the matter lesson: a change of state does not mean the material ceased to exist. If the student claims the model proves how much water entered the stream, ask where that measurement appears. The model explains a process; a quantity claim needs observations or data.

Plan the next activity

  1. Choose two systems and one interaction to model.
  2. Add an arrow, label the process, and explain what the arrow means in a sentence.
  3. Check which parts are supported by evidence and which details would need additional measurements.

For water-distribution work, choose a teacher-approved dataset, identify the reservoirs and units, and graph values without treating a small classroom sample as Earth’s entire water supply. Then connect ecosystem learning to matter movement: show where a plant obtains material and where that material goes in a simple food-system model.
