Identify a sample from a combination of properties

Practice Nevada Grade 5 science with a material-identification record, worked comparisons, selected state references and related lessons and quizzes.

The Nevada academic standards directory links the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Science, February 2014 DCI arrangements. This document identifies grade-level performance expectations and a Grades 6–8 middle-school band, including clarification statements, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete document with the school’s curriculum plan; these selected references do not cover the entire course. This activity selects a Grade 5 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Three reference samples and an unknown strip

A teacher provides a reference record for three invented samples. All are silvery, two-centimeter strips. X is rigid and attracted to the test magnet. Y is flexible and not attracted. Z is rigid and not attracted. The unknown is silvery, rigid, and not attracted under the same test conditions. Which listed sample matches? Explain what the shared appearance cannot tell you.

Explain the evidence or model

Z matches all the supplied observations. X matches the rigidity but differs in the magnet test. Y matches the lack of attraction but differs in flexibility. The silvery appearance and two-centimeter length do not distinguish these three candidates because each shares them. A complete response compares the unknown with the entire record rather than choosing the first matching property. The measured length describes the sample size and helps keep the comparison consistent; the material identification here depends on the combined property observations. This is a constrained reference-table exercise with three invented candidates, not a claim that every real silvery rigid object is the same material.

YFlexibleNot attracted
ZRigidNot attracted

What to check in the explanation

Not being attracted to this magnet does not by itself identify a particular metal or prove that an object contains no metal. The table gives only the candidates and test conditions stated here. If a real unknown fails to match every listed candidate, do not force a choice; check the observations and extend the reference collection. The selected Grade 5 expectation excludes density as an identifiable property, so this activity does not calculate or use density.

Plan the next activity

  1. List every recorded property of the unknown.
  2. Compare each candidate against all those properties.
  3. Explain the match and state the limits of the candidate list.

Use teacher-approved samples to record observable properties and measured dimensions consistently. Describe a new unknown only from the observations you actually make. Add another property when two candidates remain indistinguishable; never taste an unknown material to identify it.

Nevada Grade 5 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 5 connect to Nevada’s science assessment?

Grade 5 is one of Nevada’s science accountability assessment grades. The Nevada Department of Education identifies science accountability assessment once in Grade 5, once in Grade 8, and once in high school. Its overview describes computer-based school administration in the spring. Science instruction continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s current directions and assigned pathway, including any alternate assessment requirements. Independently published practice uses its own question counts, timers, topics, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment or a prediction of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does a silvery color identify the unknown?

No. All three invented candidates have the same appearance. Rigidity and the recorded magnet response distinguish Z within this supplied reference list.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Nevada academic standards directory and its linked K–12 science document. Read the Grade 5 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
