Connect a sound with a material’s motion

Explore Nevada Grade 1 science with a sound investigation, a worked observation record, selected state references and related lessons and quizzes.

The Nevada academic standards directory links the Nevada Academic Content Standards for Science, February 2014 DCI arrangements. This document identifies grade-level performance expectations and a Grades 6–8 middle-school band, including clarification statements, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete document with the school’s curriculum plan; these selected references do not cover the entire course. This activity selects a Grade 1 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

A ruler at rest and a ruler in motion

An adult holds a flexible classroom ruler firmly at a table edge. Compare the still ruler with its overhanging end gently moved and released. Observe the motion and listen. The invented record below illustrates how to record the comparison; it is not a report of an experiment you have performed.

Explain the evidence or model

In the supplied record, the released end moves back and forth while a sound is heard. Before release, the ruler is still and no sound from that ruler is heard. This comparison supports the idea that a vibrating material can make sound. A child could explain, “When the ruler moved back and forth, I heard it. When it was still, I did not hear it.” Keep the ruler and holding position the same while making the comparison, then repeat and record what actually happens. Look at and listen to the same event rather than assuming a picture proves that a sound was heard.

What to check in the explanation

“No ruler sound heard” does not mean the room contains no other sounds. A single invented record illustrates reasoning, but does not count as the child’s collected evidence. This activity selects the vibrating-materials part of 1-PS4-1; the complete expectation also investigates how sound can make materials vibrate. A lesson on sound needs both directions and further classroom observations.

Plan the next activity

  1. Describe what remains the same in the two cases.
  2. Observe the ruler before and after gentle release with adult help; use your actual record.
  3. Draw or say how the movement and the heard sound are related.

Ask the teacher to demonstrate how sound can make another material move, and record that second relationship separately. Compare what makes the motion in each demonstration.

Nevada Grade 1 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 1 connect to Nevada’s science assessment?

Grade 1 is not listed as a science accountability assessment grade in the current state overview. The Nevada Department of Education identifies science accountability assessment once in Grade 5, once in Grade 8, and once in high school. Its overview describes computer-based school administration in the spring. Science instruction continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s current directions and assigned pathway, including any alternate assessment requirements. Independently published practice uses its own question counts, timers, topics, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment or a prediction of a state score. Read the official guidance.

Does this one comparison cover the whole sound expectation?

No. It selects evidence that a vibrating material can make sound. The full expectation also includes evidence that sound can make materials vibrate.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Start with the Nevada academic standards directory and its linked K–12 science document. Read the Grade 1 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
