Compare Patterns That Carry a Message

Compare two invented card-message designs, decode an ordered pattern, and use trial records to propose a fair follow-up test.

The current South Dakota science page identifies the science standards adopted April 22, 2024. The assessed-standards timeline identifies 2025–26 for implementation and assessment. This activity selects a reference from the South Dakota Science Standards 2024. Check the school’s implementation plan and the full chosen edition. This activity selects a Grade 4 South Dakota science expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

The South Dakota science standards combine science and engineering practices, disciplinary core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete performance expectation and its listed practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts. Read the complete grade objectives alongside the school’s course, including investigations, models, evidence, and explanations. The general lesson library below may include review or enrichment beyond this grade’s course. This original activity is a focused starting point, not a complete curriculum crosswalk.

Two cards tell a destination

A fictional class uses two cards, shown in order, to communicate one of three destinations. Design A uses red and blue cards; Design B uses circle and triangle cards. Sender and receiver share the same code key. An invented comparison sends the same twelve destination messages using each design, with the same participants, viewing distance, lighting, and display time. Design A is decoded correctly nine times and Design B eleven times. Explain which design performs better in this record, what the record cannot establish, and how to test an improvement.

Explain the evidence or model

Order matters: red then blue means office in Design A, while blue then red means classroom. The corresponding shape patterns carry those same messages in Design B. Both designs use repeated, agreed patterns to transfer information; the receiver needs the key and must see which card comes first. In the invented trials, Design B has eleven correct readings compared with nine for Design A, so it performs better on the stated decoding criterion in this record. That result is not proof that shapes always outperform colors. The record does not explain each error or cover every distance and observer. Keep an error log, ask whether cards were misidentified or their order missed, and propose a change addressing the observed failure. A follow-up comparison should keep other conditions fixed and use repeated trials.

What to check in the explanation

The code keys and trial totals are invented, not results of a class experiment. The unused fourth pattern is not a destination in either key. These codes are classroom models, not official school directions or emergency signals. Comparing a near color display with a far shape display would change the conditions and weaken the design comparison. The related engineering expectation belongs to the Grades 3–5 band.

Plan the next activity

  1. State the information to send and the agreed key for each design.
  2. Decode the ordered pattern and compare the trial records on the same criterion.
  3. Use recorded errors to choose a revision and plan a fair retest.

Suppose the error log shows that some receivers miss the first card. Propose a clearly separated start signal that is different from every destination pattern. Compare the revised display with the original at the same distance, lighting, and display time, using a teacher-designed sequence of messages. Record correct readings and error types; do not invent successful results before testing.

South Dakota Grade 4 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 4 connect to South Dakota’s science assessment?

The department’s current 2026–27 assessment table lists the general science assessment in Grades 5 and 8. Grade 4 is outside those listed general science testing grades. The alternate assessment has separate participation guidance. Use classroom observations, explanations, and the school’s directions. Independently published practice has its own tools, timing, questions, and scoring; it is not an official state assessment. Read the official guidance.

Does eleven correct readings prove the design is always more reliable?

No. It performs better in the supplied twelve-message comparison. Repeat fair tests, record errors, and check relevant participants and conditions before making a broader claim.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read the department’s science page and the complete South Dakota grade expectation, including the stated practices, core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and relevant engineering expectations. This activity covers one selected focus, not the complete course. Read the official guidance.
