Use a pattern of rock and fossil evidence to explain change

Explore New Jersey Grade 4 science with a rock-layer evidence investigation, worked reasoning, current 2026 state references, lessons and quizzes.

The current 2026 New Jersey science standards were adopted June 3, 2026. The official adoption memo expects local curriculum revisions beginning in 2026–2027. Selected references here link to the official grade or band page. The complete current framework describes the science domains and climate-change and sustainability opportunities. Use the school’s curriculum and implementation guidance to select related investigations. This activity selects a Grade 4 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Use a pattern of rock and fossil evidence to explain change

A teacher supplies an invented diagram of undisturbed sedimentary layers at three nearby sites. At each site, the lower layer contains matching marine-shell fossils. The upper layer contains plant impressions and no marine-shell fossils in the supplied sample. The present location is dry land. Explain what the repeated evidence suggests about changes in the landscape, and identify what it cannot tell you by itself.

Explain the evidence or model

Matching marine fossils in the lower layer at several sites support an explanation that the material in that layer formed in a water environment supporting those organisms. Plant impressions in the upper layer suggest a later environment involving those plants, but the supplied observations do not specify every condition. In the stated undisturbed sequence, the lower layer was deposited before the upper layer. The repeated pattern strengthens the explanation beyond one isolated fossil. The present dry-land setting and evidence of a past marine environment support change over time; they do not alone establish whether uplift, changing water levels, or several processes produced that change. A good response names the evidence, states the supported change, and separates a possible mechanism from a demonstrated one.

What to check in the explanation

No marine fossil found in a small sample is not proof that none exists anywhere in the layer. A fossil is evidence from an organism or its trace, not a complete photograph of the landscape. Real layers may be tilted, faulted, or reworked; this classroom diagram explicitly assumes an undisturbed sequence. The records are invented and are not a geological report about a New Jersey site. Avoid assigning exact ages without additional dated evidence.

Plan the next activity

  1. Match the layer and fossil pattern across the three supplied sites.
  2. Describe a landscape change supported by the repeated observations.
  3. List evidence needed to distinguish possible causes of that change.

Add a fourth site where only a small fragment of the lower layer is exposed. Explain whether failing to find a fossil there overturns the larger pattern. Then compare a teacher-selected real geological diagram with its source, location, and assumptions clearly identified.

New Jersey Grade 4 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 4 connect to New Jersey’s science assessment?

Grade 4 is not a general science assessment grade listed in the official 2026–2027 schedule. The schedule lists science in Grades 5, 8, and 11. NJDOE identifies science as fixed-form while ELA and mathematics are adaptive. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway, current directions, and any alternate assessment requirements. Independent practice has its own timing and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Can one fossil tell us the exact age and cause of a landscape change?

Usually it cannot establish those details by itself. Combine the fossil with layer relationships, observations from other sites, and appropriate dating or geological evidence.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read the current official 2026 New Jersey grade or band expectations and the framework’s implementation guidance. Read the Grade 4 expectations and their supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
