Explain how interacting body systems support cells
Learn New Jersey Grade 7 science with a body-system argument, a worked connection to cells, current middle-school references, lessons and quizzes.
The current 2026 New Jersey science standards were adopted June 3, 2026. The official adoption memo expects local curriculum revisions beginning in 2026–2027. Selected references here link to the official grade or band page. The complete current framework describes the science domains and climate-change and sustainability opportunities. Use the school’s curriculum and implementation guidance to select related investigations. New Jersey’s middle-school science expectations use a Grades 6–8 band. The activity here is a suggested study focus; consult the school’s plan for its local grade placement.
Explain how interacting body systems support cells
A classroom model follows oxygen from air entering the lungs, into blood, and toward body cells. It also follows digested nutrients entering blood and traveling to cells. Build an argument that the body is a system of interacting subsystems, rather than a collection of organs working independently. Use teacher-selected diagrams as evidence and show what each arrow represents.
Explain the evidence or model
The respiratory subsystem exchanges oxygen between air and blood. The circulatory subsystem transports oxygen and absorbed nutrients to body tissues, while the digestive subsystem makes nutrients available for absorption. These connections support an argument that subsystems depend on interactions: a cell’s access to oxygen involves more than naming a lung. Tissues and organs consist of groups of cells with specialized roles. Label arrows as movement of oxygen, nutrients, or carbon dioxide instead of drawing unexplained lines between organ names. The model should also show carbon dioxide moving from tissues through blood toward the lungs. It is a simplified account of interacting structures, not a complete description of every cellular process.
What to check in the explanation
Do not say lungs turn oxygen into energy or that the heart manufactures nutrients. Oxygen and nutrients participate in cellular processes; organs have different roles in making them available. Avoid treating a diagram as a scaled picture of quantities or timing. The activity does not diagnose symptoms or recommend exercise or health treatments. It is a suggested Grade 7 study focus within New Jersey’s Grades 6–8 science band, and the school sets the teaching sequence.
Plan the next activity
- Name each subsystem and the groups of cells, tissues, or organs represented.
- Trace one substance across more than one subsystem and label the exchanges.
- Use those connections as evidence for an argument about the body as a system.
Revise a model that shows isolated organ boxes with no connecting arrows. Add the connections needed to explain how a muscle cell receives oxygen and nutrients. Identify an important process your revised model still omits.

How does Grade 7 connect to New Jersey’s science assessment?
Grade 7 is not a general science assessment grade listed in the official 2026–2027 schedule. The schedule lists science in Grades 5, 8, and 11. NJDOE identifies science as fixed-form while ELA and mathematics are adaptive. Science learning continues in other grades. Confirm the school’s assigned pathway, current directions, and any alternate assessment requirements. Independent practice has its own timing and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.
Is listing organs enough to explain a body system?
No. An explanation must connect the roles of groups of cells, tissues, and organs and show how subsystems interact to support the whole body.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
Read the current official 2026 New Jersey grade or band expectations and the framework’s implementation guidance. Middle-school MS expectations apply across Grades 6–8; confirm the local sequence with the school. Use the full requirements and the school’s plan to choose the rest of the course. Read the official guidance.
State sources checked October 6, 2026. Read the official 2026–2027 statewide assessment schedule for later guidance.
