Compare environmental and inherited influences without naming an untested gene

Compare plant-growth evidence in New Mexico Grade 7 science, separate environmental and inherited influences, and find middle-school references, lessons, and quizzes.

New Mexico’s science rule, NMAC 6.29.10, incorporates NGSS with additional state expectations, effective July 1, 2018. The selected NGSS references here were checked in the original publisher’s Next Generation Science Standards, September 2017 DCI arrangements. That document’s publication date identifies the reference copy; the state rule establishes New Mexico’s requirements. Read complete performance expectations, clarifications, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts alongside the school’s course plan. The selected New Mexico middle-school NGSS expectation uses a Grades 6–8 band. The activity here is a suggested study focus; consult the school’s plan for its local grade placement.

Also read the six additional New Mexico expectations and their framework. The state additions complement NGSS; this selected activity does not cover all of them.

Compare environmental and inherited influences without naming an untested gene

An invented study uses two labeled varieties of the same plant species. Each group starts with three seedlings four centimeters tall. Within each variety, one group receives a suitable water amount and another a smaller amount. Light, soil, pot size, and observation period are stated alike. Use the final heights to describe water-related differences and variety-related differences, then identify checks that a real study needs.

Explain the evidence or model

For variety A, the suitable-water final heights are 10, 9, and 11 centimeters, compared with 6, 5, and 7 under less water. Variety B shows 14, 15, and 13 with suitable water, compared with 9, 10, and 8 with less. Since every seedling starts at four, subtract four to describe its height increase. Within each variety, every suitable-water seedling grows more than any less-water seedling in this record. Under matching water labels, B finishes taller than A. These patterns are consistent with environmental conditions and inherited variety differences contributing to growth. They do not identify a gene or exclude seed quality, prior growing conditions, and other differences between the groups. A stronger explanation combines actual repeated evidence with reliable information about the varieties and checks whether the stated controls were achieved.

ASmaller amount6, 5, 7
BSuitable14, 15, 13
BSmaller amount9, 10, 8

What to check in the explanation

A final height alone is not always growth; the equal starting height is important here. A taller plant is not necessarily healthier in every situation. The invented table cannot prove that one particular genetic mechanism caused the difference, and the selected expectation does not require gene regulation or biochemical mechanisms. Suitable and smaller water amounts describe this comparison; unlimited water is not assumed beneficial.

Plan the next activity

  1. Compare growth within each variety under the two water conditions.
  2. Compare varieties under the same water label.
  3. State a bounded explanation and checks on other differences.

Use teacher-selected empirical growth records with starting measurements and documented methods. Identify environmental and inherited factors separately, then explain where they may interact. Choose the school’s unit for this middle-school band expectation rather than treating the activity as a fixed statewide Grade 7 assignment.

New Mexico Grade 7 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 7 connect to New Mexico’s science assessment?

Grade 7 is outside the general ASR science assessment grades listed in the current state fact sheet. The 2026–2027 ASR fact sheet identifies Grades 5, 8, and 11. It describes a computer-based, fixed-form assessment with three untimed sessions. Confirm the learner’s assigned pathway and current school directions, including any alternate assessment requirements. Science learning continues in other grades. Results are one measure and should be considered alongside classroom work. Independent practice has its own timing, coverage, and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Does a variety difference identify the responsible gene?

No. It can be consistent with inherited influences without identifying a genetic mechanism. Check other group differences and use reliable information alongside the observations.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read New Mexico’s science rule, NMAC 6.29.10, the complete NGSS expectations, and the six additional New Mexico expectations. The selected MS expectation is part of the Grades 6–8 band; confirm its grade placement with the school. The selected activity is not a complete alignment map. Read the official guidance.
