Compare designs that reduce a shaking model’s damage

Compare shaking-model designs in New Mexico Grade 4 science, reason from repeated results and limits, and find selected references, lessons, quizzes, and state guidance.

New Mexico’s science rule, NMAC 6.29.10, incorporates NGSS with additional state expectations, effective July 1, 2018. The selected NGSS references here were checked in the original publisher’s Next Generation Science Standards, September 2017 DCI arrangements. That document’s publication date identifies the reference copy; the state rule establishes New Mexico’s requirements. Read complete performance expectations, clarifications, assessment boundaries, practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts alongside the school’s course plan. This activity selects a Grade 4 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.

Also read the six additional New Mexico expectations and their framework. The state additions complement NGSS; this selected activity does not cover all of them.

Compare designs that reduce a shaking model’s damage

A class models one way an earthquake can affect a structure: its base moves. Design two small paper frames of equal height, using comparable paper and tape amounts. One has only upright and horizontal strips; the other includes diagonal bracing. In the invented record below, the same teacher-controlled tray movement is used for three trials of each design. Compare the designs and plan a better test.

Explain the evidence or model

The braced design stays upright in all three supplied trials, while the unbraced design stays upright in one. This limited record favors the braced frame for the stated criterion, staying upright during that tray movement. Diagonal strips can help a frame resist changing shape as its base moves, connecting the design feature with a possible mechanism. A real comparison should record the movement, attachment, dimensions, rebuilding, and damage after each trial. A frame damaged in an earlier trial is not an unchanged starting structure; rebuild comparable models or explicitly record accumulated damage. The activity compares possible solutions to reduce an effect of shaking, not a way to prevent an earthquake.

What to check in the explanation

A paper frame that survives a tray trial is not evidence that a real building is safe. Earthquake effects depend on many conditions not represented here, including materials and ground movement. Changing frame height and bracing together obscures the comparison. The results are invented for explanation practice, not measurements from New Mexico structures. Avoid claims that the stronger-looking model eliminates a natural hazard.

Plan the next activity

  1. Define the damage criterion and design constraints.
  2. Compare repeated outcomes and check starting conditions.
  3. Explain a feature to retain and a limitation to test next.

Draw a third permitted design and predict how it would behave before a teacher-controlled test. Compare benefits, materials, and the recorded criterion. Add a short explanation of how reducing damage differs from stopping the natural Earth process itself.

New Mexico Grade 4 Science: useful planning questions

How does Grade 4 connect to New Mexico’s science assessment?

Grade 4 is outside the general ASR science assessment grades listed in the current state fact sheet. The 2026–2027 ASR fact sheet identifies Grades 5, 8, and 11. It describes a computer-based, fixed-form assessment with three untimed sessions. Confirm the learner’s assigned pathway and current school directions, including any alternate assessment requirements. Science learning continues in other grades. Results are one measure and should be considered alongside classroom work. Independent practice has its own timing, coverage, and scoring and does not predict a state performance level. Read the official guidance.

Does a model design prevent the earthquake?

No. It explores reducing a particular effect on a model structure. It does not stop ground movement or certify real buildings.

Where should I check the complete science requirements?

Read New Mexico’s science rule, NMAC 6.29.10, the complete NGSS expectations, and the six additional New Mexico expectations. Read all Grade 4 expectations and supporting information alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected activity is not a complete alignment map. Read the official guidance.
