Compare wave height and spacing as separate patterns
Compare original wave models, separate amplitude from wavelength, and explain what a simple diagram can show using an Illinois Grade 4 science reference.
The Illinois science standards directory identifies NGSS as the science standards and links the standards publisher. Use the Illinois Learning Standards for Science document for the selected performance expectations and their examples and boundaries. This activity selects a Grade 4 expectation. It is one part of a science course, not a complete curriculum.
A taller wave is not necessarily a more widely spaced wave
A class compares three drawn repeating wave models. Model A and Model B have the same spacing between neighboring crests, but B rises farther above the resting line. Model C has the same height as A, but its crests are farther apart. These drawings are conceptual classroom models. Students describe the visible patterns without calculating wave speed, energy, or a numerical formula for amplitude.
Explain the evidence or model
B differs from A in amplitude: its displacement from the resting line to a crest is larger. The distance from one crest to the next remains the same in that comparison. C differs from A in wavelength: its repeating crest spacing is larger, while its height above the resting line is unchanged. Naming the feature and the reference points helps a reader understand the comparison. “B is a bigger wave” is less precise because bigger could refer to height, spacing, or both. A diagram can hold one feature constant while changing the other.
| Comparison | Height above resting line | Neighboring crest spacing |
|---|---|---|
| A and B | B is taller | Same |
| A and C | Same | C is farther apart |
What to check in the explanation
Do not measure amplitude from trough to crest and call that the resting-line-to-crest height. Also compare equivalent points when describing wavelength, such as one crest to the neighboring crest. The diagram is not a moving object and does not by itself show a wave causing an object to move. A separate physical model is needed for that part of the expectation. The Grade 4 assessment boundary excludes quantitative models of amplitude and wavelength, interference, electromagnetic waves, and non-periodic waves.
Plan the next activity
- Find the resting line and mark neighboring crests.
- Compare height with spacing unchanged, then spacing with height unchanged.
- Explain one strength and one limitation of the drawn model.
Use a teacher-led rope model with a visible marker on the rope. Watch how the marker moves as a disturbance travels along the rope; do not assume the marker travels all the way to the far end with the disturbance. Describe the observed movement before connecting it to the drawing. Then create two new repeating-wave sketches that change only height or only spacing and ask a partner to identify the change. Keep the explanation qualitative, and use the official expectation’s boundaries when planning additional work.

How does Grade 4 connect to Illinois’s science assessment?
Grade 4 is outside the Grade 5 and Grade 8 science-assessment grades listed in the state overview. The Illinois Science Assessment overview identifies Grades 5 and 8. Students eligible for DLM use the assigned alternative pathway. Follow the school’s assigned assessment pathway and current guidance. Resources here are independently published practice, not official state assessments or predictions of a state score. Read the official guidance.
Why compare wave height and crest spacing separately?
They represent different features. A taller wave model can have the same crest spacing, while a more widely spaced model can have the same height.
Where should I check the complete science requirements?
Start with the Illinois science standards directory and the official NGSS references. Read the Grade 4 expectations and their boundaries alongside the school’s curriculum plan. The selected investigation and resources here do not certify complete course coverage. Read the official guidance.
